Best Educational Toys for Babies

Tags: , , ,

There are plenty of educational toys for babies on the market that are made with your child’s cognitive development in mind.

Your baby’s focus, concentration and problem solving skills will all benefit from toys that are made not only for fun, but to inspire your baby to think and finish set tasks. Building blocks, puzzles and sound recognition toys are the staples of any infant’s education.

Building Blocks

Not too many of us have skirted through infancy without a set of building blocks or Lego sets in the early stages of our development. Nobody comes out of the womb as an engineer or scientist. We learn how to use our brains to see between the lines and find solutions to life’s problems.

Building blocks teach your baby to start with small objects and make something large out of them. Their focus is honed by having to use their hand/eye coordination to line the blocks up in a way that they won’t fall over. They are also one of the cheapest educational toys for babies that can be found on the shelves.

Puzzles

Like building blocks, puzzles train your child to use their hands and eyes to solve problems. Often you’ll have to teach by example: Going over the puzzle many times with them and rewarding your baby when they put the pieces together properly. Most parents are initially shocked at how quickly their babies catch on to puzzle concepts.

Sound Recognition Toys

These educational toys for babies start your baby’s early social and environmental development. While designs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, sound recognition toys will have a button with a picture of an animal or machine, and when the button is pressed the toy will make the noise associated with the animal or machine.

This type of toy will also get babies who aren’t speak yet to form sounds and begin speaking. Most infants will be associating the pictures with sounds within a few short weeks. It’s a great idea to have a variety of these types of toys, with several different sounds/pictures for your child to learn with.

How to Avoid Bullying

Tags: , , , ,

Bullying is a phenomenon that children often have to deal with and as parents it is up to you to help them cope with it and overcome the fear of bullies. Bullying is seen to occur in schools and colleges across the world and if not treated and addressed early on, it can have devastating effects on child development. The child becomes weak and unable to stand up for himself/herself in life.

Bullies are usually people who have deep insecurities and bully others in order to face the insecurities. They look for weak people, preying upon them because it makes them feel strong and powerful. Usually soft spoken and weak children become targets that bullies pick on.

Let us deal with this topic in a systematic manner. The following are a few pointers parents can follow helping them address the problem of bullying. Let us say your son, named Jack, gets bullied everyday in school and comes home sad and crying, lamenting always that he does not like the children who bully him. Here is what you can do:

1) Ask Jack the names that the bullies call him. Then try and explain to him that name-calling can not really hurt him. There is an excellent story in this regard: once there was a sage who lived in a hermitage in a forest with his disciples. One day, when he was giving a sermon explaining the ancient scriptures, a lady came into the sermon and started abusing the old sage accusing him to be a fake. At this the old man just kept silent and quiet, having a slight smile gracing his face. The lady left and the furious disciples asked the sage why he did not say anything to the lady. The sage told them that she had come to give him some gifts, and since he did not like the gifts, he did not take the gifts. The gifts were her harsh words. The sage remained calm and equipoise resuming his sermon as if nothing had happened. You can explain to Jack that he does not have to accept the gift of the bullies.

2) Explain to him what is happening, that they pick on him because he reacts when he cries. And they feel good and continue.

3) The magnet theory. Likes attract. Opposites move away. If he were to become strong and confident like them, they will no longer bother him.

4) Make a chart, putting up smiley faces whenever he does not react. Reward him for this.

5) Discuss with him how he overcame bullying. Tell him you are proud of him.

6) Ask him how long it takes the bullies to find new prey.

School Uniforms

Tags: , , , , , ,

Some people believe school uniforms are the only way to go when discussing a child education. Others believe they hamper a child’s self expression and should not be forced upon children. Regardless of the opinion, the use of uniforms in today’s schools as long been an intense topic among parents and faculty alike.

Experts say that violence in schools is often caused by differences in style among the students, and that uniforms have been proven to drastically reduce violence by removing the differences. The wearing of uniforms makes for a less stressful learning environment, which in turn lessens the tensions that lead to fighting.

Kids can be cruel. If one does not possess attire the wealthy student population considers ‘cool’, they will bully the poor kid, reducing his or her self esteem to terrible lows. This is usually the root of most violence and other teen tragedies, such as suicides and drug use. These disastrous results need never occur, and one way to deter them is the use of uniforms.

Sometimes, gangs crop up in schools. When they do, uniform clothing can help keep gang activity in check. By putting members of different gangs into the same clothes, you eliminate some of the hostility and gain some measure of peace.

Students can have their sense of self worth and self confidence impacted by the use of uniforms. When students wear uniforms, some schools make them act in a civil and respectable manner everywhere they go. This can raise a student’s opinion of themselves by showing them that respect can be gained by conducting yourself correctly.

Regular clothing causes far too many distractions. A student who worries about the logo splashed across his chest or jeans is not worrying about his next test. Fashion can mess up a student’s priorities and cause their studies to suffer.

Of course, uniforms are much easier to manage than regular clothes. A bunch of uniforms are much easier to organize than a lot of different clothing. Plus, they make a closet look nice and organized.

When kids grow out of uniforms, they can donate them to other kids or recycle them within the family. Uniforms are meant to instill a sense of sameness in children; they make kids focus on what’s important and not what’s popular. Doing this makes for a happier kid and a more successful student.

Annoying Child Behavior Problems and How to Manage Them!

Tags: , , , ,

It is a very well known fact that the behavior of some children can be very very annoying.

Many parents are often irritated by the behavior of their children - they would like the behavior to stop and / or change, however they do not know what they can do to initiate the ceasing of or the changing of the behavior of their children.

More often than not, parents will simply just become used to annoying behavior and therefore the annoying behaviour simply just escalates. Often to a point where it becomes a bad habit and / or bad behavior. Some parents choose not to pay any attention to their kids annoying behavior, although they are still aware of the behavior of their children.

We all know that all parents would like their children to behave better and that is why parents should be consistently encouraging their children and teaching their children good behavioral practices. If parents remain diligent in teaching their children good behavioral practices, then the bad behavioral habits will eventually cease to be a problem.

Patience is one of the essential key skills that every parent needs when teaching their child to change their behavior. Losing patience is never going to help a child improve his or her behavior. It will just become an additional problem in the future when the child displays a lack of patience when doing things. Something that most kids learn from their parents by the way!
Parents need to keep this in mind.

A few helpful tips for managing changing child behavior are:-

- Parents need to approach helping their children overcome an annoying behavioral problem proactively.

For example, when a child starts crying just to get their own way, parents should never give in to the child.

It is better to just leave the child to cry and just continue whatever task you are doing at the time.

By doing this, the child will learn that crying and / or throwing a tantrum is not the way to get what they want.

- Always keep it in mind that children learn how to behave by watching their parents and siblings. The people they spend most of their time with.

If you do not want your child to yell and scream, then you need to set the example by not doing it yourself.

- Explain to your children the types of behaviors you will not accept from them, but keep it short, simple and to the point. Children don’t understand well when they are lectured. They will just lose concentration and start thinking about something else.

- Ban all negative behaviors as well as negative words. Teach them alternative ways to say certain things. Instead of saying NO teach them to say ‘I’m busy right now. I’ll do it in a minute!’

Instant results in your changing child’s behavior are possible, but not likely, so it’s best to remember that all things do take time.

- Take note of when your kids are behaving well and give them lots of encouragement and praise when they are well behaved.
Kids love to be praised and they will soon become addicted to it. So, always give praise when it is due.

Your child’s changing behavior is normal, so learn to focus on encouraging good behavior and discouraging bad behavior and there will no longer be any child behavior problems.

Child behavior problems are sometimes very difficult to manage. Especially if you are a first time parent dealing with a first time 2 year old that is running amok!

Baking With Kids - Easy Apple Crisp Recipe

Tags: , , , ,

When my daughter was quite young we began baking together, as a diversion, on a snowy day. We started with a simple no bake cereal treat and as she grew we moved on to more complicated recipes for kids. Even now, as a busy teen, she will make time to bake with me. I truly enjoy these moments together.

Safety is the most important thing to remember when cooking with a child. You must use common sense and keep the child away from sharp knives, anything breakable and of course the hot stove and oven. l would set everything up in measuring cups and then let her pour each item into a bowl and stir or mix things together. I would give her a tablespoon to scoop up batter and roll into cookies. But my rule was that when it was time to open the oven door, to put things in or take them out, she was out of the way. She stood where I could see her but she was safe from getting burned.

One of our favorite recipes to make is Apple Crisp. This is a very basic recipe that I got from my mom a long time ago. Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. You will need 4-6 of your favorite apples. I like to use some Macintosh and Granny Smiths. I prefer to core, peel and then slice them. You can have your child arrange the apple slices in an ungreased 8-inch square baking dish.

Now, in a separate bowl, you and your child can put together the crisp topping. You will need 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup of packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup of oats, 1 1/2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon and a 1/2 cup of softened margarine or butter. You can also add 1/3 cup of chopped walnuts, at this time. Mix all these ingredients together with a fork and then have fun sprinkling the topping over the apples.

Bake uncovered until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. This takes about 30 minutes. Enjoy your apple crisp warm or cold with a little whipped cream.

Four Recipes For Kids Lunch Boxes

Tags: , , , ,

Finding recipes for kids lunch boxes can be tricky. Most parents just reheat last night’s dinner left overs and send their kids on their way.

Lunch is a pretty important meal during a child’s day, though, so if you have more time to think about and make what your kids will be taking to lunch at school, put in the extra effort. Making sure your kids are eating right in the middle of the day will definitely pay off in the future! Here are four recipes for kids lunch boxes:

· Tortilla Wrap

This is easy to do, and you can still use the leftovers! Wrap some meat and vegetables in a tortilla. You can add salsa, cheese, and/or sour cream if you like. Brown rice and beans are good additions too! Roll it up and put it in a sandwich bag or you can wrap it up in foil so it’s easy to hold. It’s a no fuss recipe that most kids will love, and it covers four of the five major food groups. Plus, you’re sure it’ll be healthier than anything your child can but at the school cafeteria!

· Chicken Salad Sandwich

Put some chopped chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumber between slices of whole wheat bread. You can add cheese or salad dressing to this sandwich to make it yummier and more appealing. Remember that you don’t have to use chicken. You can substitute chicken for tuna, sliced beef, or sliced turkey. Almost any member of the protein group will go well with this sandwich, and so you can actually mix it up and have a different one everyday!

· Meatball Sub

Grab a mini baguette and line it with mustard (if your kid likes mustard), mayonnaise, cheese, tomatoes, and pickles. Put in some meatballs cooked in tomato sauce (you can use the leftovers from the spaghetti and meatballs you served the other night), and top it off with some sour cream. Wrap this well in a sandwich wrapper or foil, and your kid is ready to go!

· Croquettes

This recipe takes a bit more time to prepare. You can do the prep for it the night before, and just do the frying on the morning you’re going to pack it. While frying isn’t the healthiest form of cooking because of the excessive oil, croquettes are easy finger foods for kids. You can shape them into ping pong balls to make them easier to eat. Stuff them with mashed potatoes, tuna, turkey, or other healthy proteins. You can also just stuff them with bechamel and cheese, and your kids are in for a tasty treat!

Always try to put in a juice box and fruit cup into the lunch box apart from the above suggestions. Yogurt and granola bars can also work as a sweet snack. Ask your children what “extras” they’d like in their lunch boxes and keep them healthy!

The Best and Worst Pets For Your Kids

Tags: , , , ,

Looking for a furry friend for your kids? Or maybe a slimy one? Before you bring pets for kids into your family find out which animals makes the best… and worst pets for little ones. (You might be surprised at which animals fail the test!)

Fancy Rat - Best

Fancy Rats make great pets for kids… that is if parents can get past their “eek” factor. While they require a large caging area, if kept in a busy room of the home the rat will bond with the family and become a member of your clan in no time. Fancy Rats also enjoy being held and are actually highly intelligent.

Fun Fact: In Victorian times rich women would often take attic rats as pets and domesticate them. They would even dress them up!

Fish - Best and Worst

Goldfish can live up to 25 years… but usually they don’t. A fish is a great starter pet for kids because they are easy to manage and require little cost to keep. However, goldfish are notorious for going “belly up”… so if you have a sensitive child they could be a crying session waiting to happen.

Turtle - Worst

Turtles are among the most desired pets to children. They are adorable and easy to handle. However, they pose a hidden danger that many parents aren’t aware of. Turtles actually carry semolina. Cleaning the cage of a turtle or handling one without proper sanitation can lead to a doctor visit.

Dog - Best

Dogs are perhaps the favorite pet of families around the world. Not only do they have a generally long lifespan they also make fast friends with their owners.

While dogs are wonderful pets some are better for kids than others. Small dogs are often not a good choice for children as they require delicate handling. Their tiny bodies are also easily tripped on as children run and play. This can be dangerous not only for the dog but also for the children.

Golden Retrievers make excellent family dogs and English Bulldogs are another great addition. They are very loyal and good with children - however, they are very protective if strangers enter the picture.

Ponies - Worst

While ponies are great fun they are very difficult to manage. They require lots of space to run, a daily routine and they have a high cost of feed and maintenance.

Goats - Best and Worst

Goats are very intelligent. In fact, many goat owners argue that they are even more loyal than dogs. You can teach them tricks… and as a bonus they mow your grass and provide you with milk. However, the thing about a goat that requires a second thought is the fact that they are little escape artists and they do require a daily routine.

Lizards - Worst

Lizards are very difficult for kids to handle. Not because they cannot be handled but because they are VERY fast. Lizards also require the feeding of bugs and the use of heat lamps so the upkeep can be rather intensive. Heat lamps are also a cause of concern for some parents who fear they will get too hot and set fire.

Guinea Pigs - Best

While they smell to Timbuktu Guinea Pigs are actually a great pet for kids. They enjoy being held, have a 2 to 5 year lifespan and aren’t known to bite as often as hamsters. Guinea Pigs are also easier to handle as they don’t require as delicate a touch as mice and hamsters.

Ferrets - Worst

Ferrets are cute… but they give off a musky scent and even worse they can give you a very bad bite. This is especially worrisome to parents of small children. Bites can easily become infected by little hands. So while ferrets are adorable and we loved them in Rikki Tikki Tavi… until kids are older we’d steer clear.

When it comes to pets only you and your family can decide what pet is right for you. While a dog might be a great choice for one family, a snake might suit another just fine.

Sit down with your family and decide what kind of responsibility you can comfortably take on, plan for bumps in the road and whatever you choose… choose to love it for life. When you do it will pay you back by loving you for a lifetime.

Role of Teachers in Child Development

Tags: , , , ,

A child has a distributed time for school and home thus he is distributed amongst parents and teachers. We can say that parents and teachers play a very important role in shaping child’s future.

Child education is basically a process that leads to mental and psychological growth of a child. Apart from leaning the academics a child learns various other things like team work, table manners, sharing, unity, teamwork. A school is a form of institute for a child; some say parents are the first teacher for the child however I feel teachers are the second parents for children. Since kindergarten a child is handed over to the teachers and teachers nourish him and bestow him with the love support and good habits.

Parents on the other hand are responsible for the overall development of the child; they play a very important role in the socializing process of the child. Right from the bed time stories to the behavioral habits parents play a very important role in making a child a responsible citizen. A successful teacher always has a keen ear on parents. Such teacher normally asks the parents about the behavior of the child, his habits and activities and behaves accordingly to him; she is responsible for his growth and development and thus tries to bring out the best in him. She is always alert with the cultures and family values of the child and thus tries not commenting or passing any judgment on the parenting styles. She thinks widely and makes sure that at any moment she may not hurt the mind of the child. Communication is best medium to solve problems. A successful teacher is always ardent at talking to the students and solving their problems, she is always approachable by almost every child of the class. Instead of blaming the child for not completing particular thing or being incapable of working on particular project or achieving bad grades she tries to find out the reason behind child’s failure or incompetency.

A successful parent on the other hand always takes the note of the suggestions the teacher has given. Such parents try to interpret on their own the suggestion given by the teachers and inculcate it in the upbringing of the children which in turn result in their growth. Over pamper or temper both results in the under development of the child. Over pamper makes the child over confident that results in the underdevelopment of the child while over temper makes the child under confident which may result in the mental turmoil of the child which also results in the underdevelopment of the child.

Stacia Tauscher remarkably said “We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.” A child is hope for tomorrow however one should never forget that his today shapes his tomorrow. The amount of pressure and mental trauma the child faces results in his underdevelopment and spoils his tomorrow. A joint venture of parents and teachers helps shaping the child’s future, his development and enhances his intellect. A child nurtured under such successful parents and teachers bestows the best in him.

Key Stages to Child Development - Childhood Ages 7-12

Tags: , , , ,

In Jean Piaget’s schemata of cognitive development the child development stage is described as concrete operations begins when the child is about seven and continues until about twelve.

In concrete operations Piaget states that the child can assimilate a great number of facts and apply rules of action to behavior, games, math, and grammar. He or she can think and reason logically with factual material, but more advanced thought processes that require abstract concepts are not yet possible.

With the coming of concrete operations, a child’s moral development moves to a new level called instrumental exchange. Now he or she can understand and comply with a requirement of equal benefit between two people. His or her moral attitude centers in fairness-you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours. Generally, children, or indeed many adults, raise the cry “It’s not fair!” when they personally have been offended, but rarely when they have benefited from the unfair situation. Life is rife with unfairness, and learning to deal with unfair situations is vital to a calm and serene attitude. The parent or coach or teacher may be able to point out some benefit that will compensate for the apparent inequality even though the child would not understand it alone. “Your reward will come later.” “You still have a chance next time.” With this kind of encouragement he or she can still anticipate a good outcome to a bad situation.

In the area of ego development Erik Erikson emphasizes the conflict between industry and inferiority. This stage seeks to build competence. It is not a question of skill in school, but of effort. Not every child is gifted in math or science or music, but every child must put forth the effort to learn all he or she can. In this endeavor a child learns to value hard work and rejoice in producing a good product. The school environment offers the opportunity to practice his or her competence and perfect the level of industry required to achieve it. Competence is difficult to achieve for a child who is smarter than average and finds school work easy. To achieve competence, the child needs a challenge and the encouragement to rise to meet it.

James Fowler calls this stage of faith development the Mythic-Literal Stage. Consistent with the other areas, the child is interested in things that are real and concrete. They are drawn to stories of victorious heroes and fair maidens, David slaying Goliath, and Deborah leading armies in battle. Applying spiritual concepts is too long a jump at this age, but they can identify with the heroes and place themselves in tough situations and envision the outcome. They may envision it as they want it to be, rather than entertain any negative vibes.

In this stage they still want to belong to the family and culture. They still seek the security of the place they know best. Stepping out into the future will bring challenges to the family structure and belief system. Building a firm foundation of competence through industrious effort will help them face the next stage.

Choosing Good Quality Child Care

Tags: , , , ,

If you want to find good quality childcare there are a few steps to follow to make sure you are making a good choice.

The first step is to consider your childcare choices. Often family care or a daycare facility is the most popular options. Be sure to visit the location and ask questions. Consider the hours, fees and location of the services they offer. Ask your friends or relatives in order to get helpful recommendations.

Second, it is important to consider health and safety issues. Make sure the facility provides a safe environment both inside and out. How does the facility work with sick children? Is the facility clean and well cared for? Do they provide medications for your children and adequate naps?

Third, consider the interaction between the staff and children. Are the staff member’s patient, sensitive and able to stimulate children or are the children off to themselves? If possible, take the time to get to know the educator and learn about their experience, field of work and favorite activities to do with children.

Fourth, are lunches and snacks provided? Does it have all the necessary parts of a balanced meal including meat, fruits, vegetables and dairy products? Are they willing to work with food allergies or personal preferences?

A day care facility often plans their activities according to developmental areas. There is physical development, fine developing for hand-eye coordination, emotional development, intellectual development, social development and creative development. Make sure all these areas of development are covered in some way at the childcare facility.

Sixth, you want to make sure the childcare facility has all the proper certification, licensing and training. Make sure they are registered with the state and have certified educators. First-aid cards should be up to date. Any licenses should be posted in the lobby or entrance of the day care.

Consider what activities the facility offers and make sure they are based on all the required developmental areas listed above. Consider what they will do if children can’t participate in a specific activity and do they respect your child’s views.

Eighth, consider what the number of children per each adult is. Consider how many children are in your child’s group. It is best to have one adult per six children or one adult per four babies. Make sure you see if there are state laws about adult to child ratios.

Lastly, consider the environment. Where is your child going to spend their time? Is there enough space for activities? All of these factors are important when it comes to choosing the right child care facility for your children.

Dealing with Child Behavior Problems

Tags: , , , ,

Are you a parent looking for ways on how to deal with child behavior problems?

All parents have to deal with a child behavior problem every now and then, because it is a common problem. As a parent, you have to be open minded concerning your methods of discipline. And always give some thought to the outcomes of your decisions.

If you believe that your adolescent may have a behavior issue, most likely you are asking yourself how you are able to assist him to go back on the right track. If a kid’s issues happen to be left unchecked, it could possibly result in destroyed adult lives, drug misuse and misbehavior.

It is important to distinguish in between mischievous kids and a kid behavior issue. Certainly, young child conduct problems undoubtedly are a bit less complicated compared to adolescent behavior problems. So, discipline and control ought to be suitable for the kid’s age.

You may perhaps have to deal with a child behavior problem in case your kid’s behavior does not meet the actual expectations within your family, or when it is disruptive. So, how are you aware of if you have a problematic child behavior problem to deal with? You need to ask yourself these questions:

1. Does it happen often?
2. Do you find it a behavior which you have attempted to solve using various methods but without results?
3. Is it a behavior which is harmful or perhaps disheartening to other people?

Persistence in your response towards a kid behavior problem is actually crucial, mainly because giving rewards to a behavior on one occasion, and penalizing it the very next time confuses your youngster. Kids have a tendency to continue a behavior when it’s recognized, and cease a behavior when it’s unnoticed. Create a new behavior that you simply have a preference for, and support it by rewarding your kids.

Parents are definitely the role model for the kids, thus a very important factor which parents must know in order to reduce the chances of their kid having a behavior problem is actually to behave themselves. Ensure that there aren’t any family quarrels in the presence of kids. Kids learn from observing grown persons particularly their own parents. Therefore, be sure that your behavior is really worth modeling.

Positive Child Punishment

Tags: , , , ,

There is no set guideline or rule to determine whether child behavior problems are just stages of learning or something more. Positive encouragement is equally as important as child punishment if not more so. This is also one reason why positive discipline should be implemented plus it works towards every ones benefit.

Sometimes it is not always easy for a parent to recognize if a child is behaving appropriate or not. Every issue that presents itself is unique unto that child, the circumstances, and the behavior as a response. Children are learning everything for the first time and it is our job to help them through the learning process as objectively as we can. This can sometimes be hard to do objectively as every parent has individual hopes and expectations of their own.

I believe that everyone has different styles of behavior and that sometimes parents are bias as to what kind of behavior they expect of their child. This does not indicate a reason for child punishment and behavioral problems children display are not always what some parents make them out to be. We as parents, and as people are flawed by our very own nature. Everyone agrees with this principle and we must recognize that our own tastes and preferences can sway our judgement of our childrens behavior.

Not everything can be registered in simple right and wrong terms. People are not that linear in nature. Human beings require depth and understanding, especially when it comes to parenting and child hood. We are all involved in a great learning process that never ends.

This is a very common problem. A parents reaction to certain behavioral problems children exhibit can be unnecessary and unjustified. It can only serve a purpose as more classified as a matter of opinion. By not fully identifying with the nature of the specific behavior, parents might feel it is not right simply because they do not like it. There only motive is to change them and make them go away simply because they do not like them. This is wrong in so many ways that it is child punishment enough, in and of itself.

It is very much like an actress pushing her shy child into public performance. Or a sports loving father shoving his book smart son on to the playing field. How would we feel if someone told us our style is wrong. This is exactly what happens when parents apply their own expectations and standards of behavior to their child regardless of the situation or characteristic of the child. It is unfair to place these kinds of standards of behavior on the childs’ character. Certainly, no punishment should be distributed in any case of character indifference.

For a child punishment is something to attribute to misbehavior and is meant to guide them. It is something that comes as consequence when you make bad choices and act on them. An example of behavioral problems children exhibit that are of serious importance are more specific in nature and cause. For instance trouble focusing for a length of time or processing thoughts clearly, not that they chose the color orange instead of blue. It will be something that they have no control over that will clarify the difference between true misbehavior or unrealistic expectations.

Maybe the behavior problems children act out are not problems at all. At least not from the child perspective or standpoint. Some things are often, easily misinterpreted and no one is to blame. We need to be a little more patient and lot more understanding when trying to parent positive, confident children. This will help go a long way between connecting with your children and building trust.

Always try to keep these things in mind when judging a child behavior or considering child punishment. Whether or not, the behavioral problems children react with, are considered as being good or bad, they can always be identified as natural first. Always use positive child punishment where ever possible. Something progressive and productive so that the child benefits from the punishment unknowingly. Practice encouragement when good behavior is demonstrated as well.

Safety and Style of Kids Riding Boots

Tags: , , , , ,

Kids riding boots were created for children that love the outdoors as well as riding horses. These boots will come in many styles and will vary by manufacturers. Before purchasing a pair of boots for a child the parent should be aware of what to look for.

The soles on the bottom of the kids boot should come with some form of non slip surface. This will help ensure child safety when they are climbing on and off of the horse. Some form of ankle support from a boot will also help to protect the child’s foot if they should happen to trip, stumble or fall.

For the look of a true farm hand there are rubber kids riding boots. These boots are the traditional knee length boot and can help protect the lower portion of the child’s leg during riding.

Quality rubber kids riding shoes will have non slip soles on them to keep the child safe in all types of outdoor weather. The inside of the boot will be lined with a mixture of knit and canvas. A kid should wear heavier socks with the rubber boots to help keep feet warm in cooler months.

Cowboy boots are often worn by children while out riding. These kids riding shoes offer some support to the ankle when worn and will help protect the shins as well. Authentic style cowboy boots are usually created with the use of real leather, brown or black, with rubber bottom soles.

Some soles of the cowboy kids riding boots will be made with a mixture of rubber and solid wood. The rubber on the sole is there to help give traction and provide a non slip surface. Cushioned insoles found within the boot will give the child comfort for hours of continuous wear.

A paddock style kids riding boot resemble the look of a regular work boot. These shoes are quickly becoming one of the more popular styles for kids today. Some manufacturers will use synthetic materials to create this boot so that they are completely waterproof.

Paddock style boots will either come with laces or they will include a zipper type closure. These kids riding boots can be found in the popular colors of black and brown.

Owning and operating a dollar store includes many varied activities and duties.

They range from head cashier to receiving clerk to chief buyer and more. Some of the activities fall clearly within the scope of owning and operating a dollar store while others seem to be outside the normal defined description.

One responsibility that many would think does not fall under the umbrella of shop owner is child safety; specifically stepping in and making sure parents properly manage their children while in your store. Yet the risk of a child being injured if you do not step in is too great. You cannot simply stand by and watch as a child is needlessly injured.

In this article I cover child safety. It is everyone’s responsibility; even the owner of a dollar store. This is a great topic to discuss with your attorney. We will examine 3 accidents waiting to happen. We will also cover methods of maintaining a safe shopping environment in your store.

* Running in store

Running children are a hazard not only to themselves, but also to other shoppers. Your store is filled with trip hazards, sharp corners and of course children often lose track of their surroundings when they run and play.

* Standing in shopping carts

Most shopping carts are somewhat stable. Yet some children will stand in the seat to reach for merchandise, or as they are trying to ‘escape’ from the cart. When that happens the cart becomes top-heavy and can tip. Children are also in a precarious position where a fall may easily occur.

* Climbing on displays

Brightly colored displays, packaging and signs are like a magnet to some children. However many are very unstable, and just as children are at risk for falls when they stand in shopping carts, so too are they as they climb ever-higher on store fixtures and displays.

Those owning and operating a dollar store should post a polite, yet pointed sign regarding children being with parents at all times for safety. So what can the owner of a store do when a child is in danger of being hurt? Start by showing your presence. Often the child will scurry back to their parent just by seeing you or another store employee are there watching. If that doesn’t work a quick word to the child asking them not to run or climb will often do the trick. That is especially true when the parent can overhear you polite concern. If that doesn’t do the trick move on to share your concern for safety and request that the parent put a halt to the behavior. Finally, if there is great risk and nothing is done your choice is to either ask the family to leave - or to hope nothing serious happens.

To your success owning and operating a dollar store!

Healthy Environment for Kids

Do we really live in an unhealthy society? Is child development difficult in an unhealthy society ? Are children still our future? These questions and many more are a topic of great concern for many mothers and fathers searching for ways to raise healthy children.

An Unhealthy Society
Thanks to rising cases of childhood obesity it is fair to conclude that we live in a society where the strategies, techniques and methods taken by parents in raising healthy children are being severely questioned. Unfortunately, an unhealthy society can only be created by people who are following unhealthy practices. The truth is, unhealthy food choices are being made all too conveniently, and this can be accredited to an increasingly frantic and fast paced working environment. Constraints on time, inexpensive and plentiful fast foods restaurants and the incessant onslaught of media perceptions and advertisements have seriously affected our diets; especially our children.

Childhood Obesity
By now we should be quite familiar with the term “childhood obesity”. It’s a severe medical diagnosis interferes with the process of raising health children. A child is considered to be obese when they are well over their normal weight based upon age and height. Childhood obesity is a troublesome health issue because the additional pounds are usually precursor to serious health issues such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes in children. The only solution for this problem is to improve or completely change the child’s eating habits and incorporate appropriate exercising regimens for children.

Raising healthy children in a society that isn’t too concern about everyone’s health can be extremely difficult; however, there are options and choices parents can take to prevent their children from becoming a statistic in the childhood obesity crisis.

Pedal Toys for Kids

Tags: , , , ,

Pedal toys are wonderful gifts for kids to get the exercise they need to be healthy and productive throughout the day. It is these very simple and classic pedal toys that can give tots all the fun they need, while keeping them active.

Unfortunately, from a very early age, too many children are filling their downtime by playing computer and video games and remaining indoors, staying in a sedentary position. While some interactive computer and video games have educational benefits, they certainly do not make up for quality time outdoors, running around burning energy and letting off steam. What better way to encourage the kids to go outside in the backyard to play than with a pedal toy.

Pedal toys are a broad term that refers to toys, usually outdoor models that can move around by being pedaled. The toys include a set of pedals, one for each foot of course, and they come in a wide array of vehicles. Some of the most popular pedal toys include pedal cars and tractors and even pedal planes. The cars are especially wide-ranging, with some looking like vintage cars, fire engines and even hot rods. Pedal toys are perfect for older toddlers and preschoolers, as the pedals take some coordination and balance and help fine tune their motor skills. As an added benefit, pedal cars can serve as a precursor for learning how to ride a bike. In this way preschoolers can go through the motions of pedaling without parents having to worry about them tipping over on a tricycle.

Besides pedal cars, there are also plenty of toddler ride-on toys that are perfect for the little ones, even those who are still gaining their balance. Toddler ride-on toys also include an extensive collection of vehicles, some equipped with horns, streamers and lights. These toys are perfect for the younger crowd, as they don’t need to be pedaled and instead get around by tots pushing with their legs and feet. Some require more balance than others, but all encourage the use of leg and feet muscles and a certain amount of co-ordination.

Pedal cars and ride-on toys are so much fun that kids will forget that they are actually being active and exercising. Indeed, these toys are best when used outdoors, so your child will be getting fresh air and sunshine as well as their daily exercise. Ride-on toys promote the use of large motor skills, helping toddlers to gain balance and coordination while strengthening the muscles and encouraging endurance. Best of all, these fun toys build creativity and role play, so our kids can enjoy “just being kids”.

Opening a Child Care Business

Tags: , , , , ,

Based on survey, more than half of mothers with children are now working in office and for this reason they seek the services of child care.

For people who love working with kids, this sounds like ideal business to venture in. In choosing a location, one has the option to select do it in their home or renting a space in a commercial area. Be prepared because it involves dealing with everyday operations, inevitable kid’s issues, security and even legal aspects.

If you are planning to operate a child care business, there are certain traits that will come in handy. Aside from having an outgoing personality, being a solid leader is needed for your success. There are risks that accompany any business and having a reliable financial source comes into play. Hiring a great staff is also crucial in starting this kind of business. Remember that you are dealing with children so every decision should be well thought of.

Home based child care business would only take short time of planning as well as little cash. However if you want to be known commercially then it would take a lot of money and time. Take into consideration that size of your child care service is dependent on your resources. The main customers for full time child care are parents with children ranging from toddlers to five years old. You start an after school child program that caters to older kids. Dual income and single parent households are your main market for both services.

Starting this kind of business is not challenged by lack of resources in terms of information. There is a wealth of websites out there where you get advice, training and support from other child care providers. The future is bright if you want to start this kind of business as the need for this service would increase. This business would also provide an opportunity to expand in a lot of ways.

Responsible Parenting

Being a parent is a tough one. Seriously. You don’t get a lot of child care training besides what your own mother and father did. There are books you can read and websites you can refer to, but everyone’s kids are different and none of the authors have met your children. So how do you know what to do?

The problem here is that common sense just isn’t that common (you’ve heard that before right?) and parents can sometimes combine that with just taking the easy way out. I’ll give them take-away food and let them stay up late if it makes them happy. That can be the ‘rut’ that a lot of parents get into where they just let the kids do and have whatever they want so that the peace is kept. Once you’re there and the kids know what they can have, it’s very difficult to get back to discipline and giving them what they need, as opposed to what they want.

Kristi and I have always been ‘different’ in that we tend to edge away from the conventional in a lot of areas. Not that we’re hippies or anything like that, it’s just that we look at things differently. Instead of asking ‘why’, we say ‘why not’. Instead of giving our kids crap food because “they like it” (of course they like it - it’s made to be tasty) we give them the same food that we eat and 95% of the time they love it. Also, they haven’t been exposed to a lot of ‘wrong’ food; they’ve never tasted a cola drink, they have sweets and chocolate sparingly and always as a treat NEVER as the norm. So we’ve come to a point where our 5 year old Emily is asking for salad sandwiches for her school lunches. She’s in great shape, she’s happy and so are we. She doesn’t feel like she’s missing out at all.

Back to fizzy soft drinks, I once saw a parent give one of these sugary monsters to an 18 month old who was not sleeping at night because “he likes it”. Do you really think that a kid who can’t sleep needs sugar and caffeine? The poor little one was mainly hyperactive during the day - he doesn’t need ADD drugs he needs less sugar in his diet. He also needs to know that he doesn’t get treats when he’s playing up.

I’m not a parenting guru and I don’t think anyone is, but I must remove my hat in honour of my darling wife Kristi who has always had a clear vision, instinctively, about what her kids should be exposed to from a dietary point of view. What you put into their bodies determines who and what they are. There are a lot of overweight kids out there and I don’t think there’s any excuse for that. How can you say you care for and love your children, then feed them food that makes them overweight. Worse still, you do that, see the results, then continue to do that.

This blog post started as a thought about parenting in general but I’ve realised, in wrapping up, that pretty much all of the problems that parents face come down to basic discipline, sticking to your guns and plain GOOD FOOD. Real fresh food can be so satisfying and beneficial on so many levels, not just nutritional but also behavioral. We’ve made some ‘interesting’ meals (from a kid’s point of view anyway) and our girls have vacuumed up everything on their plate.

Give you kids a real chance at a healthy, happy life by starting with the fuel you put in front of them and I think everything else will start to fall into place. If you’re not there right now then there might be some resistance but again, it’s about making a decision for your family’s well-being, sticking to your decision (which is another area where parents can fail) and watching the wonderful change in your pride-and-joys.

What’s been your experience with bringing up kids, or watching someone else bring up theirs?

Bike Parade

Tags: , , , , ,

Children usually look for any excuse to ride their bicycles during the summer. These children activities are all fun. While you’re planning your 4th of July festivities, why not organize a 4th of July bike parade in your neighborhood? It will give those in your neighborhood an opportunity to show off their bikes, celebrate the holiday, and have fun at the same time!

The bike parade doesn’t have to be limited to children; adults can and probably should participate as well. Here’s what you’ll want to do to plan and host your own neighborhood bike parade.

1. Gather the neighborhood together to discuss your idea and see how many people are interested in participating. After you know who will be involved, you can determine the parade route through your neighborhood. Don’t make it too long that little children won’t be able to participate, but don’t make it too short that adults and older teens won’t be interested.

2. Announce the event in your area at local businesses. Create colorful flyers with the important information – date, time, and place. You may want to include a tear-off with your telephone number so others in your area can contact you if they need more information.

3. Ask the children to decorate their bicycles, tricycles, wagons, or scooters with streamers. Leaving the type of transportation open will allow more people to join in the fun. The only limitations necessary are that the decorations not be dangerous such as things poking off of a bike that a child might be injured on. Otherwise, the sky is the limit as far as the decorations go.

4. Allow the children, and adults too, to dress up in patriotic clothing or have a face painting area set up at the beginning of the route so those interested can have their faces painted with red, white, and blue flags, stars, and Uncle Sam hats.

5. Plan to arrive early on the day of the parade. Mark off the route and be ready with other adults to help you. Take your time getting everyone arranged so the parade will be safe (adults or teens at the front and back to keep an eye on the children).

6. Choose a teen or adult to lead the parade because they’ll need to carry the music. Remind the participants to stay together rather than running off on their own. This is a parade, not a race, so it’s important that the parade go slowly enough for young children but quick enough for older children not to become too impatient.

7. Ask those viewing the parade to take pictures to remember the day by. You may even want to call the local newspaper to come and cover the parade.

8. At the end of the parade, you can have refreshments or a picnic for everyone to enjoy together.

July 4th is a great day in the United States’ history. You can organize a 4th of July bike parade for your children and others to enjoy. They can show of their bikes and have a great time celebrating the day. If it’s a success, you may want to consider making the bike parade a yearly event.

Don’t Make Your Kids Talk to Strangers

Tags: , , , ,

From a very young age parents repeat the words “don’t talk to strangers” to their children over and over again for child safety concerns. Conversations may end with parents listing the people in the child’s life with whom they are allowed to talk and give information to. But does your child really understand the meaning behind those words? Do they know this doesn’t mean the gentleman down the street who dresses “strange”?

You want to be sure your child or children understand who a stranger is. You also want to pass along instructions on how they are supposed to react to any situation involving a stranger approaching them. Here are some tips to help teach your child about stranger danger.

Start by reviewing the aspects your child already knows about. Discuss the topic of predators and methods they use to try and gain the trust of children. Remind your children:

* Never take candy from strangers.
* Never accept toys from strangers.
* Never get into the car of a stranger for any reason.
* Never believe a stranger who says they’ve been sent by a parent to pick them up. Having a family password will enable your child to know for sure.

Encourage your child to use the buddy system when walking to and from school, to the corner store, or to a local park. In fact, using the buddy system where they are not accompanied by an adult is the best idea.

Be sure your child knows what to do in case of any trouble or fearful situation. Remind them to yell “NO!” very loudly. Then they should run to a safe place if a stranger comes too close or makes them uncomfortable.

Speaking of safe places, does your child know how to recognize one? Tell your child to be aware of any and all safe places they can go to if they feel uncomfortable. Knowing their full name, address, and phone number is important so they can give it out ONLY when they’ve reached safety.

It’s also important that your children know who safe people are. Help them realize that not all strangers are bad people, but it’s not easy to tell merely by looks. Make sure you explain to them there are some adults they can turn to, such as police or security officers, teachers, clerks at the corner or grocery store, or even employees, nurses and doctors at the neighborhood clinic or hospital - whether they know them personally or not.

After you’ve explained the dangers, help your child feel safer by letting them know there are more good people in this world than there are bad people. You want them to grow up as healthy children but you still need to explain the danger of strangers or what to do if they are approached by someone they don’t know.

Work/Life Balance

Tags: , , , , , ,

When you work outside of the home, you may bring work home or postpone children activities with your family so you can work late. You know there has to be a better way. Consider trying one of these ten ways of better work/life balance so you’re not torn between the two.

1. Prioritize what’s important – Before you can have a more balanced life, you’ll want to know what things are important and learn how to prioritize them. Focus on your family before work. Don’t let your boss bully you into working late if you already have a family activity planned.

2. Drop activities that are too much – Check your calendar to see what’s upcoming. To free up time, drop any activities that make your schedule too busy or that aren’t necessary. Try to limit activities to only one for each child.

3. Learn to say “no” – Remember it’s alright to say no if your boss asks you to stay late. If they offer you overtime work, tell them thank you but you have plans you can’t break it. Ask them if you can work overtime on another date.

4. Plan for the future – Take time to get away for a day or weekend to plan, dream, or just relax. Give yourself an opportunity to look forward to what the future can hold when your work and life are more balanced.

5. Reduce clutter – Try to clean your desk off completely before leaving work on Friday. Put all important dates on a centralized calendar and get rid of the papers. Organize your office and home as well as reduce clutter to give you more time to do things you want.

6. Plan time for yourself – Don’t neglect yourself while focusing on work and family. Taking time out for yourself will help you be a better parent, a better partner, and a better employee.

7. Get help when needed – Don’t be afraid to get help when needed. Hire a babysitter or ask grandparents to take the children while you’re working. Do you work from home? Find a virtual assistant or hire someone to do work for you while you attend to family needs.

8. Know your limits – There’s no such person as Superman or Superwoman. You’re not able to do everything without something having to give; most of the time the thing that gives is your health.

9. Plan for balance – Unexpected things may happen, but if you put time for you to enjoy a hobby or spend time goofing off with your children on your calendar and guard that time, you’re more likely to actually make those plans possible.

10. Ask your employer about flex time. Some employers offer flex time where you work overtime without pay so you can take time off at a future date. It can’t hurt to ask your employer about this. The worse they can do is tell you it’s not available.

These ten ways of better work/life balance are a few of the many changes to consider if you’re working too much. You may feel the need to work but there’s no reason it should take over your life. Using one or more of these ideas may help you get your priorities in order and give you more time to spend with your family.

Miso Wonders for Kids

Tags: , , , ,

Many people in the United States have never heard about miso because they don’t eat Asian cuisine. Doctors’ reports, however, have agreed about the healing properties in miso especially for recipes for kids. If you’re curious about it, here are six good reasons to start eating miso.

For those who aren’t aware, miso is a paste made from fermented and ground soybeans which has been fermented for two months up to two years. It is often mixed with rice, barley, or wheat to speed up fermentation. Normally, it can be found in the international aisle of most grocery stores.

1. Miso is versatile. It can be made into a dressing for salads, soup, or made into a tea. Miso comes in white, brown, deep red and creamy beige, each with its own distinct flavor. Flavors range from sweet and mild to savory and earthy.

2. Miso is also high in fiber and probiotics. It increases the enzymes your body produces in your digestive system by increasing beneficial micro-organisms. These micro-organisms will break down foods better which will enable more nutrients to be absorbed, giving you more energy.

3. Most people eat meat to get protein. However, miso provides high quality vegetable protein that is highly usable in the body. In fact, if you were to eat miso with whole grains, the proteins you consume would be increased. It also contains unsaturated oils and zero cholesterol, which doctors recommend as part of a heart-healthy diet.

4. Some reports have confirmed miso as being beneficial by helping prevent some cancers, heart disease, and other illnesses. It has also been touted to eliminate heavy metals, nicotine, and air pollutants from your system. Women who eat miso regularly have been shown to be less likely to develop breast cancer.

5. Miso is high in essential minerals such as zinc which aids the immune system. Iron, copper and manganese are also in ample supply in miso.

6. If you’re moving toward a more vegetarian diet, miso would be a great addition. It is high in vitamins K and B12, both essential for a healthy body.

How on earth do you use miso? There are a number of ways you can try to start using miso in your family’s meals: use it instead of a stock (chicken or vegetable) when making home-made soups, spread it on toast similar to butter, use it as a salt substitute when you’re cooking, or mix it with sesame oil and your favorite seasonings to make an Asian-inspired salad dressing.

Although doctors in the West can be slow to acknowledge the health benefits of foods used traditionally in the East, it seems they’re taking notice of miso. By reading these six reasons to start eating miso, you can see how this food from Japan can improve your health and help you avoid some diseases. Maybe it’s time to find it in your grocery store and make it a part of your family’s diet.

Balance, Balance!

Tags: , , , , ,

Depending upon the age of your children, they may be involved in a myriad of children activities. You know the importance of striking a fair balance between allowing children to be involved in activities and having time for the family to spend together. Unfortunately, the children may not agree with your definition of “fair.”

Perhaps your older children are interested in a number of activities. They may want to be involved in baseball, football, soccer, martial arts, gymnastics, softball, basketball, or ice skating. Then there’s band, dance, musical instrument lessons, or voice lessons they’re interested in. Throw in scouting or volunteering and the number of possible ways to be away from home increases even more.

It’s important to make sure kids aren’t involved in too many activities. Children, like adults, only have 24 hours in each day. They have to attend school and sleep at least eight hours a night. This leaves eight hours for eating, doing chores, doing homework, spending time with family, and then extracurricular activities.

You can choose to limit each child to one extracurricular activity per season. If your child is athletic you might allow them to play two sports each school year as long as they don’t coincide with one another. Do you have a music lover? Allow them to play in the band, but you could ask them to wait until summer to take individual lessons.

How do you maintain balance among the different family members? While you may not favor one child over the other, it may seem that way to your children. Try to spend quality time alone with each child at some point during the month. In fact, you may want to plan a special “date” with each child. This will enable them to have undivided time with you or your partner and squelch any complaints about you not spending time with them.

You’ll also want to be sure you to spend quality time with your partner so they don’t feel left out. Planning a weekly or bi-weekly date night is important for maintaining your relationship. Instead of spending your time talking about the children, take the opportunity to dream about your future.

While you’re spending time with others in the family, don’t forget to take care of yourself. You can’t be expected to be able to meet others’ needs if you’re overly stressed or burned out. A trip to a day spa which will pamper you may be just what you need to rejuvenate.

So, you’ve limited the number of activities each person in the family is allowed to participate in. You are also spending time with each child to ensure they feel loved. Now it’s time to keep all of the activities from cutting into the family’s free time, but what can you do to accomplish this? One thing you might consider is actually scheduling activities for the entire family to do together.

Talk about activities that everyone in the family would enjoy. This could be anything from visiting a museum, going fishing, or watching the latest movie. If your children range in age, you may find it difficult to find activities everyone will enjoy. In this case, switch up the types of activities you choose so everyone has at least one or two activities they enjoy.

Keeping your family running smoothly isn’t easy when each person is running in and out of the house to different activities. You know the importance of striking a fair balance between outside activities and family time - using some of these ideas may help create the balance you seek.

Turn Down the Pressure

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Life can be stressful, there’s no doubt about it. You may be wondering how to turn down the pressure and learn to de-stress. Why not try one or more of these ten tips to de-stress and watch your pressure level drop; it will help parenting and child development.

Full-body breathing

Deep breathing, or full-body breathing, is considered to be one of the best ways to lower stress. Breathing deeply sends oxygen throughout your body and encourages the brain to calm which allows the body to relax. This is a great way to de-stress that won’t cost more than a little bit of time and effort on your part to master.

Stop your temper from flaring up

Failure to control anger can be detrimental to emotional and physical health. In fact, anger can result in additional stress you may not want, whilst controlling your anger can help you de-stress and relax. Learning to not take things personally can help anyone control their anger which will result in their being less stressed.

Head massage

If you’re stressed you may end up with a pounding headache. Although many people instinctively rub their temples to reduce tension and eyestrain, learning more about head massage or finding someone trained to give them may be one way to turn down pressure in your life.

Think positive

You may have been instructed to “think positive” on occasion. Positive thoughts and self-talk can actually reduce stress by focusing on good things rather than bad. Some researchers claim optimists will live longer, have better health, and have less stress. Try it today and see if it’s true for you.

Get some exercise

Exercise is a tried and true method to reduce stress. Not only is exercise good for you physically, it also releases endorphins which will improve your mood and outlook. Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous to do your body good - a daily walk outside can do wonders to relieve stress and help you feel better.

Find something to laugh about

It’s been said that laughter is the best medicine, and it seems science has proven this fact. Laughter reduces stress and exercises the internal organs. The effects of laughter can also remain after you’ve stopped laughing. Find a silly movie and laugh away; it does your body good.

Keep a journal

Writing out things that frustrate you helps reduce stress as well as give you clarity of thought. If you’re able to see a situation clearly, you’ll feel less stressed about it. Grab a pen, some paper, or your computer, and feel the stress ease away.

Meditate

Meditation has long been used to combat stress. It also helps with physical pain and enables you to feel more peaceful. Spending fifteen minutes in meditation can calm the mind and help you re-focus when you have to return to your normal day.

Take a bubble bath

Women have this relaxation technique mastered, but the benefit of bubble baths isn’t only for women. If you’re overtired and stressed, time in bubbles can do wonders to restore peace to your mind and reduce the effects of stress on your body.

Get plenty of rest

If you’re not sleeping well, it’s not unusual to feel stressed. Lack of sleep can also lead to a short temper, lack of concentration, and physical tiredness. Sleeping will help reduce stress, and re-charge your mind and body for what the day holds in store.

Life can be stressful, but there’s no reason you can’t use these ten tips to turn down the pressure. You can use them individually or in combination for added stress-reducing benefits.

Slow Cooking for Kids’ Meal

Tags: , , , , ,

Slow cookers, or crock pots, are small appliances used by many families around the country. A look around will provide a myriad of cookbooks or websites on the internet with recipes for kids for use with the crock pot. The benefits of slow cooking go far beyond the ease of finding recipes, however.

One of the main benefits of slow cooking is how easy it is. Unlike traditional cooking methods, you don’t have to stand over the stove to ensure the dish cooks properly. You can place everything into the slow cooker, set it, and then walk away. In fact, you don’t even have to be at home while your meal cooks as most recipes require four to eight hours cooking time.

Depending upon the recipe, you can place the ingredients into the cooker and the meal will be ready to eat either when you get up in the morning or when you return from a day at work. What could be easier than that? And the slow cooker did all of the hard work for you!

Saving time is another benefit of slow cooking. The major portion of the meal is done by the slow cooker, which leaves a side dish or salad and your meal is done. If you have more than one size of slow cooker, you can make a different component of the meal in each one.

Another benefit of using a slow cooker is how versatile they are. You can cook nearly any style of recipe in a crock pot. Do you need something special for breakfast? There are slow cooker recipes for that. How about a casserole for dinner? There are many ethnic recipes. The fact is you can find recipes for any meal of the day, even dessert.

Slow cooking is also nutritious. Use fresh or frozen ingredients rather than ingredients which are full of chemicals or preservatives. You can use fruits that are in season rather than canned ones which have fewer nutrients. Cooking foods on low heat over a longer period of time also helps the foods retain more of the vitamins and minerals.

Some people think slow cookers can only be used during the cooler months. The truth is, however, you can use a slow cooker at any time of the year. Slow cookers won’t heat up the kitchen the way an oven will, but will provide you with delicious food your whole family will enjoy.

Finally, the benefits of slow cooking can also improve your pocket book. You can find ingredients which are on sale at your grocery store to use in your slow cooker. You can also use cheaper groceries such as dried beans, noodles, and rice.

It’s obvious the benefits of slow cooking are many. If the ease of use isn’t enough to convince you to get one, think about the time you can shave off of preparing meals or how much money you can keep in your wallet. Why not give it a try?

Why Do My Kids Fight

Tags: , , , , ,

“Mom, he’s touching me!” If you have more than one child, you’ve probably heard that statement or something very similar. If you’re wondering “why do my kids fight,” it might help to know these child behavioral problems are not just yours. In fact, you might wonder what the matter was if they didn’t fight. Here are some common reasons why siblings have arguments:

Sibling rivalry

Sibling rivalry is often the source of much fighting between brothers and sisters. It may start before the new child is born because the older child already feels like their place in the family is threatened. The main reason why children fight is that they feel the need to compete for your attention and they may seriously resent having to share you with someone new. As your children get older, the fighting may continue but you can be assured they do love one another despite the tension.

Different temperaments

You know no two children are alike, even twins, so your children’s different temperaments may be part of the cause of their fighting. One child may be laid back while the other is overly dramatic. You may have one that’s clingy with your or your partner while the other is independent and wants to try everything on their own. The difference in their temperaments may cause resentment. For example, the child who is clingy may seem to get more of their parent’s attention, which in turn leads to disagreements.

Different personalities

Similarly, personality differences may also be part of the reason your children fight. Your outgoing, rambunctious child may need a friend to pal around with. If your other child is more studious, there are going to be personality clashes. Try to encourage your children to meet in the middle and do activities both will enjoy.

Jealousy

Quite often jealousy is the biggest reason children fight. One feels they don’t have the attention of their parents like their sibling, so they feel the need to fight for attention and affection. Of course, you can tell your children that you don’t have a favorite until you can’t speak anymore, but jealousy is a strong emotion to overcome.

Competition for parent’s attention

It is possible that your children feel the need to compete for your attention. To combat this tendency, and make for a more peaceful home, you might want to plan special “dates” for each child. Depending upon the number of children you have, you could plan one day a month that you or your partner spends a specific amount of time with just one child. Switch up where your partner takes the rest of the children while you go someplace with one. Be sure each child has their own “date” time with either you or your spouse so they don’t feel slighted. It may reduce the fights right away.

What can you do when your children fight? Set ground rules about disagreements long before you’re faced with children fighting. Be sure they know hitting and calling names is not allowed; anyone doing these things will face pre-determined consequences.

If possible, don’t get involved unless you think there might be bodily injury. Intervening may create other problems and your children won’t learn the important skill of conflict resolution. Wait and see how they’re able to work out their problems on their own. You might be surprised at the solutions they come up with.

Children are going to have conflicts; it’s inevitable. When you ask yourself or others “why do my kids fight?” remember it’s part of growing up. They’re learning to stand up for themselves, express themselves, and further develop their personalities.

How to Create Your Own Household Planner

Tags: , , , , , ,

Some families are busy and some are homebodies. If there’s more than one person in the family, knowing how to create your own household planner can help keep everyone in the family more organized especially for child development.

Household planners can be made from nearly anything, but three-ring binders seem to work best for many families. Purchasing a binder with a clear pocket on the front and back will allow you or your children to create a colorful or pretty cover for it. Choose a 1-inch, 2-inch, or 3-inch binder to meet your family’s needs.

After creating the binder itself, you’ll want to have the following items on hand to fill the household planner:

* 8 1/2” x 11” calendar (purchased or one you print for yourself)
* 3-hole punched dividers with pockets
* 3-hole punched dividers with tabs
* 3-hole punch

Decide which categories you’ll need in your household planner. Common categories include calendar, finance, contacts, school, medical, manuals, planning, insurance, automobile, warranties, favorite recipes, and take out menus, among others. Use the categories that will work best for your family and make a tabbed divider for each category.

Print off blank contact pages which include name, address, telephone, and cell phone numbers. There are many sources online which offer this type of file to print out for free. You can also find blank calendars to print off to include in your home planner.

Find papers that have accumulated in your family – notes from school, old calendars, take-out menus, etc. – and determine which category they’ll fit into. Three-hole punch them and place them behind the tab they belong to. Smaller items that can’t be punched can be placed in the dividers with pockets to keep them from being lost.

After you’ve found papers with important dates on them, transfer those dates to the calendar you have or have printed out. You may want to color code your family so you can see at a glance which person in the family has activities on a particular date. Don’t forget to write down standing dates such as birthdays and anniversaries so you can plan for them.

Not sure if you’ve paid a bill for the month? Having a schedule of all bills owed, when they’re due, and when they’re paid behind the finance tab can make that problem a thing of the past. The household planner is also a good place to put all bills as they come in so they’ll be available when it comes time to pay them.

Meal planning is another task that can be made easier by having the household planner. You can create monthly meal plans and store them in the planner. Don’t forget to include a blank shopping list in a sheet protector which can be written on with a marker or India crayon and reused each shopping trip.

When you figure out how to create your own household planner, you may find actually putting it together can be fun. Be creative and make your planner something you and your whole family can use. Of course, after your planner is made and you’ve used it for a while, you may wonder why you didn’t put one together sooner.

Easy Steps to Publish Your Family Website Online

Tags: , , , , ,

You’ve finally done it! You’ve completed your family history as far back as possible and would like to publish the information for family members to see and child education.

You’ve thought about putting it all in a book, but book publishing can be expensive. Here are easy steps to publish your family website online and save yourself the expense of a bound volume.

Why do you want to publish your family website online? Some want to share the information with family spread around the world. Others do it in an attempt to find other family members they haven’t met. Whatever your reason, know that you can do it with some time and effort.

Your first step is to decide what and where you want to publish it. Do you want family around the world to add what they have? Or do you want to publish what you have with photos of family members and any pertinent source documents? Knowing exactly why you want to publish the information will help you decide which type of website you’ll need.

You can create a searchable database by submitting GEDCOM files to other websites which already offer this service. Websites such as Ancestry World Tree, RootsWeb World Connect, and GenCircles are a few to consider. This is the simplest way to publish your family data, but it may not be enough.

Creating your own website requires you to get a domain name and web hosting service. There are some websites which are designed for genealogists; some which will do so for free. If you have to pay to host the website, you will probably get extra features to make the price worth paying.

Some genealogists have chosen a blog format for publishing family history. You can do this as a type of journal detailing the information you’ve found or you can modify most blogs to include photographs, links to documents, or other content other than mere text. Depending upon the information you want to include, you may be able to do this yourself. If you don’t have the ability, it’s generally easy to find people who will design a website for you for a price.

Create a sitemap which is a list of the pages your site contains. What categories or sections will there be? You may want to plan on leaving room on your sitemap to add more pages in the future. If you do this step it will allow you to organize your thoughts and help you decide what content needs to go on which page.

Write the content for the website - whether it is a narrative of the family history, stories told to you by various family members, or descriptions of what you’ve done to find the information you’re presenting. Then you can link to copies of actual documents showing birth, marriage, or death certificates or others you may have.

Try to add photographs if possible. While most people will be glad to have documentation about their family, they’d probably enjoy looking at pictures, too. It is also important to proof-read everything to ensure the information is correct and names are not misspelled.

Once you have everything ready, publish the website. This may be the easiest step, but it may have taken you a while to get there. Remember, these steps to publish your family website online may be easy, but the effort and time to get to this point may have been more difficult. When your website is up and family members are visiting, you will be glad you spent the time.

How to Raise a Moral Child

Tags: , , , , ,

Morality is a code of conduct in which one decides right from wrong. Knowing how to raise a moral child, especially in today’s world, isn’t always easy. You may want to follow some of these tips to teach your child this important character trait.

Although morality is often defined in terms of religion, it is much more than a religious concept. Morals are also defined by society, philosophy, and conscience. They are the center of how people make ethical decisions.

What can parents do to ensure their children learn morals? Here are some suggestions:

* Be a good moral role model. It’s often said that when children are involved more is caught than taught. This means they’ll watch what you do, how you act and react to situations, and how moral you are to learn morality. By being a good role model, they’re more likely to follow your positive examples rather than ones you may not be proud of.

* You expect your children to be honest, so model honesty before them. You’ll have a hard time convincing your child honesty is important if you tell someone you can’t be somewhere because you’re sick. This sends a mixed message to your children, and may make your child think honesty isn’t as important as you say.

* Respect others. Children may begin treating others the way they see you treat those in your life. If you’re disrespectful your children may disrespectful.

* Know your own morals and values. Think about the things and people that are important to you. Use those as the basis for how you make decisions and as the starting point to determine the things you do.

* Do what you can to help your child develop a sense of their own worth: a strong sense of self. By having self-esteem, your child won’t have to get the approval of their peers. Instead, they will be able to make rational choices based on their values and self-worth.

* Help your child learn to think for themselves, which will allow them to make wise decisions rather than depending on the influence of others to make them. With the various external influences today – peers, television, movies, and songs – you want your children to know how to think on their own.

Children and teens that learn to make their own decisions and stand on their own two feet are more likely to do the right thing. They may also stand up for the underdog if they see someone being mistreated. Having strong moral principles will help your child make the right decisions.

Ultimately, as the parent, you have the most influence on your children’s moral development. Help them establish good self-esteem, to think for themselves, and model morality before them. They’ll see how important morality is to you and will follow in your footsteps.

Teach Humor’s Value to Kids

Tags: , , , ,

It’s often been said “Laughter is the best medicine.” If you’re having a bad day, surround yourself with people who are having a good time, and before long your bad day will be a thing of the past. Humor is important; it’s one way to get the fun back into your life and help you feel good. Child behavior problems will stop erupting if children have a nice sense of humor.

There are many benefits of having a good sense of humor and laughing each day. Laughter, when it’s shared between friends and family, can actually improve your relationship. It can also have a domino effect by being contagious. All you need is for one person to begin laughing and others will soon join in the fun. Laughing actually triggers physical changes in the body which means there are health benefits of humor as well as emotional ones.

The health benefits of humor and laughter include reducing the effects of stress, lessening the sensation of pain, and giving you a boost of energy. You can also expect to feel better emotionally after laughing, particularly if the laughs were deep, sustained belly laughs. Laughter can also boost your immune system which could keep your entire body healthier.

Some experts believe laughing can be as good for you as exercise. In fact, some experts think of laughter as jogging for the inside of the body. The good thing about laughter is that you don’t need any special equipment, don’t have to pay for classes, and it can be enjoyed anywhere. Best of all, it’s free!

Humor and laughter reduce stress. You can’t be stressed out if you’re laughing; it’s simply impossible. When you laugh the body releases endorphins which help reduce stress. It also improves your mood which can have a large part to play in how stressed you feel. Laughter relaxes your muscles and can help you remain happier for up to 45 minutes after the laughter stops.

How do you get humor back into your life if it seems to be non-existent? There are a number of things you can do.

* Start with a smile. Smiling, like laughter, is contagious. If you’re already smiling it will be much easier for you to break into laughter. Think about something pleasant or enjoyable. Then when something does or says something silly or funny, you’ll be laughing with them before you know it.

* Move toward laughter whenever you hear it. In most cases, if someone is laughing loud enough for others to hear them, it’s unlikely they’ll be upset if you come near. You can actually ask people, “what’s so funny,” and they’ll likely tell you so you can join in the fun.

* Spend time with people who are fun to be with. Children are great for being able to laugh easily. Some adults can easily laugh at themselves or at funny things that happen around them. When they start laughing, it’s easy to get caught up in the joy, too.

* Watch older comedies that you found funny in the past. Some of the newer comedies simply aren’t as funny as they’d like us to believe. Find comedies that make you laugh and enjoy them regularly.

You may have heard the song lyrics “Money makes the world go around.” That may be partially true. However, you may want to try humor instead. Learn how to get fun back into your life and feel good by laughing every day.
