School Uniforms

Tags: , , , , , ,

Some people believe school uniforms are the only way to go when discussing a child education. Others believe they hamper a child’s self expression and should not be forced upon children. Regardless of the opinion, the use of uniforms in today’s schools as long been an intense topic among parents and faculty alike.

Experts say that violence in schools is often caused by differences in style among the students, and that uniforms have been proven to drastically reduce violence by removing the differences. The wearing of uniforms makes for a less stressful learning environment, which in turn lessens the tensions that lead to fighting.

Kids can be cruel. If one does not possess attire the wealthy student population considers ‘cool’, they will bully the poor kid, reducing his or her self esteem to terrible lows. This is usually the root of most violence and other teen tragedies, such as suicides and drug use. These disastrous results need never occur, and one way to deter them is the use of uniforms.

Sometimes, gangs crop up in schools. When they do, uniform clothing can help keep gang activity in check. By putting members of different gangs into the same clothes, you eliminate some of the hostility and gain some measure of peace.

Students can have their sense of self worth and self confidence impacted by the use of uniforms. When students wear uniforms, some schools make them act in a civil and respectable manner everywhere they go. This can raise a student’s opinion of themselves by showing them that respect can be gained by conducting yourself correctly.

Regular clothing causes far too many distractions. A student who worries about the logo splashed across his chest or jeans is not worrying about his next test. Fashion can mess up a student’s priorities and cause their studies to suffer.

Of course, uniforms are much easier to manage than regular clothes. A bunch of uniforms are much easier to organize than a lot of different clothing. Plus, they make a closet look nice and organized.

When kids grow out of uniforms, they can donate them to other kids or recycle them within the family. Uniforms are meant to instill a sense of sameness in children; they make kids focus on what’s important and not what’s popular. Doing this makes for a happier kid and a more successful student.

Annoying Child Behavior Problems and How to Manage Them!

Tags: , , , ,

It is a very well known fact that the behavior of some children can be very very annoying.

Many parents are often irritated by the behavior of their children - they would like the behavior to stop and / or change, however they do not know what they can do to initiate the ceasing of or the changing of the behavior of their children.

More often than not, parents will simply just become used to annoying behavior and therefore the annoying behaviour simply just escalates. Often to a point where it becomes a bad habit and / or bad behavior. Some parents choose not to pay any attention to their kids annoying behavior, although they are still aware of the behavior of their children.

We all know that all parents would like their children to behave better and that is why parents should be consistently encouraging their children and teaching their children good behavioral practices. If parents remain diligent in teaching their children good behavioral practices, then the bad behavioral habits will eventually cease to be a problem.

Patience is one of the essential key skills that every parent needs when teaching their child to change their behavior. Losing patience is never going to help a child improve his or her behavior. It will just become an additional problem in the future when the child displays a lack of patience when doing things. Something that most kids learn from their parents by the way!
Parents need to keep this in mind.

A few helpful tips for managing changing child behavior are:-

- Parents need to approach helping their children overcome an annoying behavioral problem proactively.

For example, when a child starts crying just to get their own way, parents should never give in to the child.

It is better to just leave the child to cry and just continue whatever task you are doing at the time.

By doing this, the child will learn that crying and / or throwing a tantrum is not the way to get what they want.

- Always keep it in mind that children learn how to behave by watching their parents and siblings. The people they spend most of their time with.

If you do not want your child to yell and scream, then you need to set the example by not doing it yourself.

- Explain to your children the types of behaviors you will not accept from them, but keep it short, simple and to the point. Children don’t understand well when they are lectured. They will just lose concentration and start thinking about something else.

- Ban all negative behaviors as well as negative words. Teach them alternative ways to say certain things. Instead of saying NO teach them to say ‘I’m busy right now. I’ll do it in a minute!’

Instant results in your changing child’s behavior are possible, but not likely, so it’s best to remember that all things do take time.

- Take note of when your kids are behaving well and give them lots of encouragement and praise when they are well behaved.
Kids love to be praised and they will soon become addicted to it. So, always give praise when it is due.

Your child’s changing behavior is normal, so learn to focus on encouraging good behavior and discouraging bad behavior and there will no longer be any child behavior problems.

Child behavior problems are sometimes very difficult to manage. Especially if you are a first time parent dealing with a first time 2 year old that is running amok!

My name is Lucas Uren and I have been managing my children’s behavior problems for the past 8 years, to the best of my ability until, my second son - now 2 and a half entered the terrible two’s stage of his infancy. My wife and I didn’t know what to do and were forced to source help.

We were lucky enough to find some great resources on child behavior help that have really helped us to manage our 2 year old’s behavior.

Outside at Last - Child Development, Physical Education and Toddlers

Tags: , , , ,

Alright, it is almost that time of the year. You know, time to get the kids out of the house. You want your children to have fun. You want child safety to be in the forefront.

You want your children to have an educational experience. Most of all, you want your children outside. For older children it is easy. That is, if you can get the controllers out of their not so tiny hands. But let’s begin with the little ones, specifically, those children ages 12 to 24 months. Most children 12 to 24 months will have fun just by being outside and exploring their environment.

Educational experiences are not necessarily limited to those experiences involving wires, cords and high-tech gizmos. For example, a child can improve his or her motor skills and balance by riding his or her cow or ladybug wheelybug. Moving forwards, backwards, sideways and round and round, a child’s spatial development and awareness improve as he or she moves around on his or her wheelybug. And all of this is achieved without motors, batteries or controllers. Sandboxes are another great example of a low-tech, non-motorized mode of educational entertainment. In addition to spatial awareness and motor skills, the sandbox is a wonderful forum for social development and creative play. Sand, a little water, a shovel or spoon and a lot of imagination is all that is necessary for a day of creative learning.

Baby dolls are another low-tech educational toy and are great for promoting nurturing in both boys and girls. Baby dolls can be feed, bathed, dressed, kissed and hugged. Baby dolls listen and understand what we adults do not. Baby dolls are loved and love unconditionally. Children can also learn the names of body parts, clothing and activities while playing with their baby dolls. All that is needed with a baby doll is imagination and creativity and, perhaps, a stroller for your child’s baby doll so that both your child and your child’s baby doll can enjoy the outdoors.

Simple push along walkers are good for outdoor entertainment. Push along walkers assist in improving balance. Children can walk behind their push along walker with a comfortable and “safe” feeling while at the same time exploring their environment. Again, this educational toy is run not on batteries but, rather, on toddler power. As you can see, physical education can begin at a very early age and may begin your child on a pattern of healthy living that will follow your children into adulthood.

Easy Pasta Recipes For Kids

Tags: , , , ,

If you’re trying to encourage your kids to learn to cook, then you might consider some easy recipes for kids for pasta.

Most kids quite like pasta, and if they can make something gooey with lots of cheese, or make something with lots of slippery sliding pasta shapes, they might eventually notice that they like other things about pasta dishes as well.

There are lots of places to find easy pasta recipes that kids can make. For example, at Get-Kids-Cooking.com there is a recipe that takes very little time, but which gives parents an opportunity to teach kids how to cook spaghetti.

While seven ounces of spaghetti is cooking for ten minutes, the kids help chop six ripe tomatoes, and will no doubt enjoy giving two cloves of garlic a good crush. The tomatoes and garlic, three tablespoons of olive oil and two ounces of carefully grated Parmesan cheese can go into a bowl, and the cooked spaghetti can be stirred into it, along with fresh chopped basil. It’s very simple, but introduces kids to some good tastes.

Easy recipes for kids to make can sometimes be found on larger recipe websites like AllRecipes.com or Epicurious.com, but most of those are geared toward adults. You may have to look harder for pasta dishes aimed toward the kids themselves as the cooks, but there are some entertaining and fun ideas out there. If they prepare the pasta themselves, then the kids may eventually become interested in cooking more elaborate, “grown-up” dishes.

You can get elaborate for your own pasta meals, with complex sauces and ingredients, but for getting kids involved in cooking, there’s nothing like a few simple and fun to make pasta recipes.

Nothing beats the taste of fresh pasta made right in your own home. And surprisingly, it’s not difficult at all to make. Click here to learn how a pasta roller machine such as the Imperia pasta maker can make it easy for you.

Child Behavior Problems - Can Angry Attention Make Kids Worse?

Tags: , , , ,

When parents become angry in response to child behavior problems, they might be inadvertently encouraging the unwanted behavior. Here is why…

All children need attention, and, for various reasons, some children need a lot of attention. Any attention tends to increase the behavior that it follows, especially focused attention, and nothing is more focused than intense anger.

So if you have a child who needs lots of attention, and you give that child a lot of powerful, intense, angry attention, they are very likely to repeat the behavior that sparked your anger in order to get even more of that juicy attention.

Also, children tend to mimic the behavior of their parents, so if you are aggressive with them, they are more likely to be aggressive towards you and others.

Children Don’t Anger Parents Deliberately

I’m not saying that the average attention-seeking child consciously enjoys angry attention. To the contrary, most children find it very uncomfortable and distressing, and would much rather have gentle, positive attention, however it is their unconscious mind that is in control, craving the intense angry attention.

It’s not just aggressive forms of attention, such as shouting, smacking, that can create a problem. Nagging, lecturing and fussing are also very satisfying forms of attention for an attention-hungry child.

Parents Can Get Addicted Too

The other important part of the equation is that parents can get in the habit of giving negative attention to their children for unwanted behavior.

When a parent is repeatedly frustrated by a child, it is easy to get in the habit of continually criticizing them, not trusting them, and finding many things they do to be annoying. This habit can develop in any close relationship, be it with a spouse, sibling or parent, but in the parent-child relationship the effect can be most destructive.

Children tend to internalize the messages and labels their parents give them. So if they are frequently being criticized by their parents, they will believe that they are the naughty, difficult person they are told they are.

How to Break the Habit

To help the attention-hungry child get over their craving for negative attention, parents must give them copious quantities of positive attention for good behavior, and simultaneously starve them of negative attention for bad behavior. This will encourage the good behavior and extinguish the bad behavior, while satisfy the child’s need for attention. It will also improve their self esteem and desire to please you, and reduce stress levels on both sides.

So, if you have a child who is frequently disobedient or angry:

  • Try to minimize the attention you give to them for the unwanted behavior.
  • Put into place a simple, clear strategy, such as counting followed by time out, to deal with the behavior, and use this consistently and persistently.
  • Avoid discussion or too much eye contact.
  • Stay relaxed and calm, but assertive.
  • Keep mindful that your child is not consciously trying to provoke you; they are just reacting to the situation and their emotions in a way that they have learned to react.
  • Try to ignore the small stuff. Only use the discipline strategy with the worst behaviors. You can work on any other annoying behaviors once they master these.
  • And most importantly, give them plenty of positive attention for the opposite, desirable behaviors. For instance, give them plenty of praise when they obey a command, or play nicely with their sibling, or get ready for school on time, or pick up their clothes, or have a calm day without a tantrum. This step is crucial, especially whilst you are weaning them off their addiction to negative attention.
  • You could also introduce age appropriate reward systems to encourage your children, such as reward charts, or tokens that could be spent on fun activities with you, like throwing a ball, or playing a board game.

Giving your children an abundance of positive attention for desirable behavior and minimizing the negative attention you give them for undesirable behavior should improve your child’s behavior and self-esteem, as well as positively affect your relationship with them, especially if you throw some family fun into the mix. And as your child’s self esteem grows and your relationship with them improves, you might find that their general need for attention diminishes, leaving you with a happy, well-adjusted, easy-to-manage child.

The Best and Worst Pets For Your Kids

Tags: , , , ,

Looking for a furry friend for your kids? Or maybe a slimy one? Before you bring pets for kids into your family find out which animals makes the best… and worst pets for little ones. (You might be surprised at which animals fail the test!)

Fancy Rat - Best

Fancy Rats make great pets for kids… that is if parents can get past their “eek” factor. While they require a large caging area, if kept in a busy room of the home the rat will bond with the family and become a member of your clan in no time. Fancy Rats also enjoy being held and are actually highly intelligent.

Fun Fact: In Victorian times rich women would often take attic rats as pets and domesticate them. They would even dress them up!

Fish - Best and Worst

Goldfish can live up to 25 years… but usually they don’t. A fish is a great starter pet for kids because they are easy to manage and require little cost to keep. However, goldfish are notorious for going “belly up”… so if you have a sensitive child they could be a crying session waiting to happen.

Turtle - Worst

Turtles are among the most desired pets to children. They are adorable and easy to handle. However, they pose a hidden danger that many parents aren’t aware of. Turtles actually carry semolina. Cleaning the cage of a turtle or handling one without proper sanitation can lead to a doctor visit.

Dog - Best

Dogs are perhaps the favorite pet of families around the world. Not only do they have a generally long lifespan they also make fast friends with their owners.

While dogs are wonderful pets some are better for kids than others. Small dogs are often not a good choice for children as they require delicate handling. Their tiny bodies are also easily tripped on as children run and play. This can be dangerous not only for the dog but also for the children.

Golden Retrievers make excellent family dogs and English Bulldogs are another great addition. They are very loyal and good with children - however, they are very protective if strangers enter the picture.

Ponies - Worst

While ponies are great fun they are very difficult to manage. They require lots of space to run, a daily routine and they have a high cost of feed and maintenance.

Goats - Best and Worst

Goats are very intelligent. In fact, many goat owners argue that they are even more loyal than dogs. You can teach them tricks… and as a bonus they mow your grass and provide you with milk. However, the thing about a goat that requires a second thought is the fact that they are little escape artists and they do require a daily routine.

Lizards - Worst

Lizards are very difficult for kids to handle. Not because they cannot be handled but because they are VERY fast. Lizards also require the feeding of bugs and the use of heat lamps so the upkeep can be rather intensive. Heat lamps are also a cause of concern for some parents who fear they will get too hot and set fire.

Guinea Pigs - Best

While they smell to Timbuktu Guinea Pigs are actually a great pet for kids. They enjoy being held, have a 2 to 5 year lifespan and aren’t known to bite as often as hamsters. Guinea Pigs are also easier to handle as they don’t require as delicate a touch as mice and hamsters.

Ferrets - Worst

Ferrets are cute… but they give off a musky scent and even worse they can give you a very bad bite. This is especially worrisome to parents of small children. Bites can easily become infected by little hands. So while ferrets are adorable and we loved them in Rikki Tikki Tavi… until kids are older we’d steer clear.

When it comes to pets only you and your family can decide what pet is right for you. While a dog might be a great choice for one family, a snake might suit another just fine.

Sit down with your family and decide what kind of responsibility you can comfortably take on, plan for bumps in the road and whatever you choose… choose to love it for life. When you do it will pay you back by loving you for a lifetime.

Role of Teachers in Child Development

Tags: , , , ,

A child has a distributed time for school and home thus he is distributed amongst parents and teachers. We can say that parents and teachers play a very important role in shaping child’s future.

Child education is basically a process that leads to mental and psychological growth of a child. Apart from leaning the academics a child learns various other things like team work, table manners, sharing, unity, teamwork. A school is a form of institute for a child; some say parents are the first teacher for the child however I feel teachers are the second parents for children. Since kindergarten a child is handed over to the teachers and teachers nourish him and bestow him with the love support and good habits.

Parents on the other hand are responsible for the overall development of the child; they play a very important role in the socializing process of the child. Right from the bed time stories to the behavioral habits parents play a very important role in making a child a responsible citizen. A successful teacher always has a keen ear on parents. Such teacher normally asks the parents about the behavior of the child, his habits and activities and behaves accordingly to him; she is responsible for his growth and development and thus tries to bring out the best in him. She is always alert with the cultures and family values of the child and thus tries not commenting or passing any judgment on the parenting styles. She thinks widely and makes sure that at any moment she may not hurt the mind of the child. Communication is best medium to solve problems. A successful teacher is always ardent at talking to the students and solving their problems, she is always approachable by almost every child of the class. Instead of blaming the child for not completing particular thing or being incapable of working on particular project or achieving bad grades she tries to find out the reason behind child’s failure or incompetency.

A successful parent on the other hand always takes the note of the suggestions the teacher has given. Such parents try to interpret on their own the suggestion given by the teachers and inculcate it in the upbringing of the children which in turn result in their growth. Over pamper or temper both results in the under development of the child. Over pamper makes the child over confident that results in the underdevelopment of the child while over temper makes the child under confident which may result in the mental turmoil of the child which also results in the underdevelopment of the child.

Stacia Tauscher remarkably said “We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.” A child is hope for tomorrow however one should never forget that his today shapes his tomorrow. The amount of pressure and mental trauma the child faces results in his underdevelopment and spoils his tomorrow. A joint venture of parents and teachers helps shaping the child’s future, his development and enhances his intellect. A child nurtured under such successful parents and teachers bestows the best in him.

Choosing Good Quality Child Care

Tags: , , , ,

If you want to find good quality childcare there are a few steps to follow to make sure you are making a good choice.

The first step is to consider your childcare choices. Often family care or a daycare facility is the most popular options. Be sure to visit the location and ask questions. Consider the hours, fees and location of the services they offer. Ask your friends or relatives in order to get helpful recommendations.

Second, it is important to consider health and safety issues. Make sure the facility provides a safe environment both inside and out. How does the facility work with sick children? Is the facility clean and well cared for? Do they provide medications for your children and adequate naps?

Third, consider the interaction between the staff and children. Are the staff member’s patient, sensitive and able to stimulate children or are the children off to themselves? If possible, take the time to get to know the educator and learn about their experience, field of work and favorite activities to do with children.

Fourth, are lunches and snacks provided? Does it have all the necessary parts of a balanced meal including meat, fruits, vegetables and dairy products? Are they willing to work with food allergies or personal preferences?

A day care facility often plans their activities according to developmental areas. There is physical development, fine developing for hand-eye coordination, emotional development, intellectual development, social development and creative development. Make sure all these areas of development are covered in some way at the childcare facility.

Sixth, you want to make sure the childcare facility has all the proper certification, licensing and training. Make sure they are registered with the state and have certified educators. First-aid cards should be up to date. Any licenses should be posted in the lobby or entrance of the day care.

Consider what activities the facility offers and make sure they are based on all the required developmental areas listed above. Consider what they will do if children can’t participate in a specific activity and do they respect your child’s views.

Eighth, consider what the number of children per each adult is. Consider how many children are in your child’s group. It is best to have one adult per six children or one adult per four babies. Make sure you see if there are state laws about adult to child ratios.

Lastly, consider the environment. Where is your child going to spend their time? Is there enough space for activities? All of these factors are important when it comes to choosing the right child care facility for your children.

Children are believed to learn more with the help of science educational toys to learn the basic and advance concepts of science. Educational toys are created to aid in the natural process of learning. The youngsters learn through playing while various science kits and toys help them in the stimulation of their brains.

Educational toys are created by keeping two concepts in mind. Firstly, the psychology of the child that is significantly important to design a toy product. Secondly, the products should aid and motivate the child to learn new concepts. Playing and learning is combined together with of these innovative toy products.

Every child is different from the other and has different needs. Some children mull over and improve on their own but a few among them need to have an extra hand to evaluate and stimulate the learning process. They need motivation and guidance to release their fears against complex scientific equations or formulas. Science kits are especially designed for this purpose because they turn difficult and dry subjects into something fun and joyful to learn.

Science kits and gadgets turned the early nineties era into a magical period when the toy manufacturers started using display technology and computing power to create educational toys. The digital toys in the market brought about a new revolutionary change. Thousands of new toys like LCD games replaced the electromechanical toys of the past. The new revolutionary educational toys and games are cost effective and easy to purchase.

Toy companies and manufacturers are continuously in the competition of introducing innovative new educational toys now and then. Electronics and technology have become cheaper enough to create amazing toys to increase the interactivity and stimulation for the children.

Science kits and educational toys are manufactured for the children of every age type. They include all the components and a set of instructions for the child to play and learn. There are also strict standards of health and safety of the toys for the children. Health and safety regulations are employed to use only the best available material for the children to avoid any threat or hazard against the safety of the child. The warning signs and recommended age is also printed on the packaging of the toys.

Some science kits help the child to jump start science fair projects. The child can also find some interesting ideas printed on the instructions manual. There are some science kits available for serious experiments like a chemistry set. Many children are more interested in playing video games. Unlike the general belief video games do not make a child passive. They are quite helpful to increase activity of the mind.

Science educational toys are best if they are chosen appropriately according to the age of the child. The parents should also encourage and allow the child to choose as per their interests. There are many options from butterfly kits to DNA kit and LCD games are available for the stimulation of child’s mind and will forever change the way they retain information.

Safety and Style of Kids Riding Boots

Tags: , , , , ,

Kids riding boots were created for children that love the outdoors as well as riding horses. These boots will come in many styles and will vary by manufacturers. Before purchasing a pair of boots for a child the parent should be aware of what to look for.

The soles on the bottom of the kids boot should come with some form of non slip surface. This will help ensure child safety when they are climbing on and off of the horse. Some form of ankle support from a boot will also help to protect the child’s foot if they should happen to trip, stumble or fall.

For the look of a true farm hand there are rubber kids riding boots. These boots are the traditional knee length boot and can help protect the lower portion of the child’s leg during riding.

Quality rubber kids riding shoes will have non slip soles on them to keep the child safe in all types of outdoor weather. The inside of the boot will be lined with a mixture of knit and canvas. A kid should wear heavier socks with the rubber boots to help keep feet warm in cooler months.

Cowboy boots are often worn by children while out riding. These kids riding shoes offer some support to the ankle when worn and will help protect the shins as well. Authentic style cowboy boots are usually created with the use of real leather, brown or black, with rubber bottom soles.

Some soles of the cowboy kids riding boots will be made with a mixture of rubber and solid wood. The rubber on the sole is there to help give traction and provide a non slip surface. Cushioned insoles found within the boot will give the child comfort for hours of continuous wear.

A paddock style kids riding boot resemble the look of a regular work boot. These shoes are quickly becoming one of the more popular styles for kids today. Some manufacturers will use synthetic materials to create this boot so that they are completely waterproof.

Paddock style boots will either come with laces or they will include a zipper type closure. These kids riding boots can be found in the popular colors of black and brown.

Pedal Toys for Kids

Tags: , , , ,

Pedal toys are wonderful gifts for kids to get the exercise they need to be healthy and productive throughout the day. It is these very simple and classic pedal toys that can give tots all the fun they need, while keeping them active.

Unfortunately, from a very early age, too many children are filling their downtime by playing computer and video games and remaining indoors, staying in a sedentary position. While some interactive computer and video games have educational benefits, they certainly do not make up for quality time outdoors, running around burning energy and letting off steam. What better way to encourage the kids to go outside in the backyard to play than with a pedal toy.

Pedal toys are a broad term that refers to toys, usually outdoor models that can move around by being pedaled. The toys include a set of pedals, one for each foot of course, and they come in a wide array of vehicles. Some of the most popular pedal toys include pedal cars and tractors and even pedal planes. The cars are especially wide-ranging, with some looking like vintage cars, fire engines and even hot rods. Pedal toys are perfect for older toddlers and preschoolers, as the pedals take some coordination and balance and help fine tune their motor skills. As an added benefit, pedal cars can serve as a precursor for learning how to ride a bike. In this way preschoolers can go through the motions of pedaling without parents having to worry about them tipping over on a tricycle.

Besides pedal cars, there are also plenty of toddler ride-on toys that are perfect for the little ones, even those who are still gaining their balance. Toddler ride-on toys also include an extensive collection of vehicles, some equipped with horns, streamers and lights. These toys are perfect for the younger crowd, as they don’t need to be pedaled and instead get around by tots pushing with their legs and feet. Some require more balance than others, but all encourage the use of leg and feet muscles and a certain amount of co-ordination.

Pedal cars and ride-on toys are so much fun that kids will forget that they are actually being active and exercising. Indeed, these toys are best when used outdoors, so your child will be getting fresh air and sunshine as well as their daily exercise. Ride-on toys promote the use of large motor skills, helping toddlers to gain balance and coordination while strengthening the muscles and encouraging endurance. Best of all, these fun toys build creativity and role play, so our kids can enjoy “just being kids”.

Good Child Nutrition Tips

Tags: , , , ,

Proper and balanced nutrition is crucial to normal child development.

Children need to obtain a balanced diet that should include plenty of vegetables, legumes, fruits, cereals, lean meat, fish, poultry, milk, yoghurt, cheese and water. Nutrients can largely be grouped into macronutrients(carbohydrates, protein and fat) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).

The increasing prevalence of childhood obesity may have caused parents to be extra careful when considering the amount of fats to include in a child’s diet. And with the constant bombardment weight loss and ‘thin = beautiful’ messages from the media, children are exposed to image problems at a much younger age. The reality is, for a growing child, fat is an integral part of a child’s diet as it:

1. provides a concentrated form of energy for their growth and development

2. essential fatty acids such as omega-3 are necessary to maintain regular functioning and structural integrity of cells in the body and the brain.

3. is required to deliver certain Vitamins around the body

Two of the most frequently seen nutritional deficiencies now seen in children are iron and calcium.

Iron Deficiency

Children need to absorb an average of 1mg of iron per day for regular growth. However, since only about 10% of iron is actually absorbed by their bodies, they will need to consume about 8-10mg of iron per day. Iron deficiency in its mild stages usually remain asymptomatic but if prolonged, you may see you child become increasing lethargic, out of breath, losing appetite and having headaches. Therefore, it is important to know which foods are rich in iron sources. There are 2 types of iron found in foods:

  • Haem iron are found in red meats and chicken
  • Non-haem iron are round mostly in fortified cereals, eggs, legume, wholegrain bread and some vegetables. To improve the absorption of non-haem iron, it is a good idea to combine these foods with those high in Vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and juices.
  • too much iron can lead to constipation and black or grey stool so iron supplements should be handled with caution unless advised by your doctor

Calcium deficiency

Calcium needs for children are particularly high due to growth in their skeletal tissues. Children ages between 4-8 yrs need about 700mg per day, rising to 1000mg per day for those aged 9-11yrs. Over two-thirds of children do not receive the amount of calcium they require on a daily basis.

  • Milk and milk products are the highest sources of dietary calcium for young children
  • Vegetables such as tofu, legumes and green leafy vegetables generally are quite high in calcium.
  • Vegetables low in oxalate provide better absorption of calcium such as bok choy, Chinese cabbage and broccoli.
  • Nuts and seeds (sesame seeds, almonds and brazil nuts) also add calcium to the diet (as well as being low GI)

All in all, you know your children and their pattern of behaviour better than any one else. Education is key when it comes to making informed decisions and tailoring for your child’s needs. Tags: , , , ,

People all over the country are trying to lose weight. They may try counting calories, skipping meals, cutting out certain foods, or working out long hours to try to pare the pounds. One thing weight-loss experts recommend to anyone trying to slim down is that they create a food journal to help lose weight especially for child care.

You can create a food journal out of any number of materials. You can get a three-ring binder with notebook paper, a spiral ring notebook, create a journal to suit your needs, or print out pre-made food journals which you find on the internet.

The purpose of a food journal is to track what you’ve eaten during the day. This will give you an accurate picture of what you’ve eaten all day long. It will ensure you’re getting all of the nutrients you need as well as helping you keep track of how much water you’re getting each day.

* Choose the type of journal you’ll use. As stated above, you can use nearly anything as a journal as long as you can carry it with you to track what you’re eating. Online journals aren’t recommended unless you write everything down during the day and then record things at the end of the day.

* Write down everything you eat during a 24-hour period. This includes all meals, snacks, chewing gum, hard candies, or beverages. You may want to use two pages per day to ensure you have enough room to write everything down. You can also use the space for the day to write down if you’ve eaten alone, with friends, what mood you were in when you ate, or other information which might affect how much you ate during the day.

* Throughout the day, look at your journal to ensure you’re getting enough of each food group. Did you eat get five servings of fruits or vegetables? Did you drink enough water? Did you eat too much of any food or too many fats?

* By keeping the journal, you can see what you’re actually eating, which foods you’re eating too many of and can cut back on, and which foods you need to eat more of. You can also determine how many calories you’re eating each day, and then make a decision as to where you can cut back.

Some pre-made journals will break down what you’re eating into categories such as fats, proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, fruits, and vegetables. You decide how in-depth you’d like your journal to be; if it’s too detailed and is more trouble than it’s worth you may not continue using it. The simpler you keep your journal, the more likely you’ll be to use it.

What can you learn when you create a food journal to help you lose weight? You can see if there are certain foods that cause you to stumble. You can also note if there are certain times of the day which you struggle most. Finally, you’ll have a better understanding of how much you’re actually eating during the day so you can decide what changes can be made to help you shed those unwanted pounds.

Treatment for Burns

Tags: , , ,

Despite parents’ best efforts, each year children are hurt during the 4th of July by fireworks. Knowing what to do in case of burns is important for child safety, not only during July fourth, but at all times of the year. These basic first aid tips are for burn injuries when fireworks are the culprit.

The easiest way to avoid burns from fireworks is to enjoy public displays only. While it is unlikely that your children will be injured at a public display, due to the distance the fireworks are from those viewing them, it is still possible. Most injuries, however, occur when the general public purchase and use fireworks at home.

Of course, you know how important it is to use care when fireworks are in the plans. While most injuries from fireworks occur on the head, face, or hands, the bottom of the feet may also be affected. Most injuries will be minor burns or first degree, but second degree burns are possible. If the unthinkable does happen and your child gets burned due to fireworks, you’ll want to act quickly.

1. Put the fire out. If the child’s clothing is on fire, have them stop, drop, and roll to extinguish the flames. You may also want to put a dampened towel or blanket over them to put out the flames.

2. Determine if the burn is severe enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room. First degree burns are superficial and the skin is still intact. Second degree burns affect the top two layers of the skin and often blister. Third degree burns destroy the skin. Both second and third degree burns need immediate medical attention. Any burn that covers more than 10% of the body would fall into this category. Call for an ambulance to allow a trained professional to care for these burns.

3. If the burns are minor, they can be treated by running cool water over the affected area and then covering it loosely with a sterile compress. You may also want to apply a topical burn cream to the area and have them take an over-the-counter pain reliever.

4. Second degree burns, or worse, require you to cover the area of the burn with a cool, moist, sterile bandage, cloth, or towel. DO NOT immerse the person in cold water as this will cause them to go into shock. Leave burned clothing on the person as removal may pull the skin away and invite infection. Get professional medical help as quickly as possible, by either calling 9-1-1 for help or taking them to a hospital if they can be transported.

If you feel you must use fireworks at home, be diligent in supervising children. Even though sparklers aren’t considered to be as dangerous as some fireworks, children are sent to the emergency room each year due to injuries from these items.

Turn Down the Pressure

Life can be stressful, there’s no doubt about it. You may be wondering how to turn down the pressure and learn to de-stress. Why not try one or more of these ten tips to de-stress and watch your pressure level drop; it will help parenting and child development.

Full-body breathing

Deep breathing, or full-body breathing, is considered to be one of the best ways to lower stress. Breathing deeply sends oxygen throughout your body and encourages the brain to calm which allows the body to relax. This is a great way to de-stress that won’t cost more than a little bit of time and effort on your part to master.

Stop your temper from flaring up

Failure to control anger can be detrimental to emotional and physical health. In fact, anger can result in additional stress you may not want, whilst controlling your anger can help you de-stress and relax. Learning to not take things personally can help anyone control their anger which will result in their being less stressed.

Head massage

If you’re stressed you may end up with a pounding headache. Although many people instinctively rub their temples to reduce tension and eyestrain, learning more about head massage or finding someone trained to give them may be one way to turn down pressure in your life.

Think positive

You may have been instructed to “think positive” on occasion. Positive thoughts and self-talk can actually reduce stress by focusing on good things rather than bad. Some researchers claim optimists will live longer, have better health, and have less stress. Try it today and see if it’s true for you.

Get some exercise

Exercise is a tried and true method to reduce stress. Not only is exercise good for you physically, it also releases endorphins which will improve your mood and outlook. Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous to do your body good - a daily walk outside can do wonders to relieve stress and help you feel better.

Find something to laugh about

It’s been said that laughter is the best medicine, and it seems science has proven this fact. Laughter reduces stress and exercises the internal organs. The effects of laughter can also remain after you’ve stopped laughing. Find a silly movie and laugh away; it does your body good.

Keep a journal

Writing out things that frustrate you helps reduce stress as well as give you clarity of thought. If you’re able to see a situation clearly, you’ll feel less stressed about it. Grab a pen, some paper, or your computer, and feel the stress ease away.

Meditate

Meditation has long been used to combat stress. It also helps with physical pain and enables you to feel more peaceful. Spending fifteen minutes in meditation can calm the mind and help you re-focus when you have to return to your normal day.

Take a bubble bath

Women have this relaxation technique mastered, but the benefit of bubble baths isn’t only for women. If you’re overtired and stressed, time in bubbles can do wonders to restore peace to your mind and reduce the effects of stress on your body.

Get plenty of rest

If you’re not sleeping well, it’s not unusual to feel stressed. Lack of sleep can also lead to a short temper, lack of concentration, and physical tiredness. Sleeping will help reduce stress, and re-charge your mind and body for what the day holds in store.

Life can be stressful, but there’s no reason you can’t use these ten tips to turn down the pressure. You can use them individually or in combination for added stress-reducing benefits.

Why Do My Kids Fight

Tags: , , , , ,

“Mom, he’s touching me!” If you have more than one child, you’ve probably heard that statement or something very similar. If you’re wondering “why do my kids fight,” it might help to know these child behavioral problems are not just yours. In fact, you might wonder what the matter was if they didn’t fight. Here are some common reasons why siblings have arguments:

Sibling rivalry

Sibling rivalry is often the source of much fighting between brothers and sisters. It may start before the new child is born because the older child already feels like their place in the family is threatened. The main reason why children fight is that they feel the need to compete for your attention and they may seriously resent having to share you with someone new. As your children get older, the fighting may continue but you can be assured they do love one another despite the tension.

Different temperaments

You know no two children are alike, even twins, so your children’s different temperaments may be part of the cause of their fighting. One child may be laid back while the other is overly dramatic. You may have one that’s clingy with your or your partner while the other is independent and wants to try everything on their own. The difference in their temperaments may cause resentment. For example, the child who is clingy may seem to get more of their parent’s attention, which in turn leads to disagreements.

Different personalities

Similarly, personality differences may also be part of the reason your children fight. Your outgoing, rambunctious child may need a friend to pal around with. If your other child is more studious, there are going to be personality clashes. Try to encourage your children to meet in the middle and do activities both will enjoy.

Jealousy

Quite often jealousy is the biggest reason children fight. One feels they don’t have the attention of their parents like their sibling, so they feel the need to fight for attention and affection. Of course, you can tell your children that you don’t have a favorite until you can’t speak anymore, but jealousy is a strong emotion to overcome.

Competition for parent’s attention

It is possible that your children feel the need to compete for your attention. To combat this tendency, and make for a more peaceful home, you might want to plan special “dates” for each child. Depending upon the number of children you have, you could plan one day a month that you or your partner spends a specific amount of time with just one child. Switch up where your partner takes the rest of the children while you go someplace with one. Be sure each child has their own “date” time with either you or your spouse so they don’t feel slighted. It may reduce the fights right away.

What can you do when your children fight? Set ground rules about disagreements long before you’re faced with children fighting. Be sure they know hitting and calling names is not allowed; anyone doing these things will face pre-determined consequences.

If possible, don’t get involved unless you think there might be bodily injury. Intervening may create other problems and your children won’t learn the important skill of conflict resolution. Wait and see how they’re able to work out their problems on their own. You might be surprised at the solutions they come up with.

Children are going to have conflicts; it’s inevitable. When you ask yourself or others “why do my kids fight?” remember it’s part of growing up. They’re learning to stand up for themselves, express themselves, and further develop their personalities.

How to Raise a Moral Child

Tags: , , , , ,

Morality is a code of conduct in which one decides right from wrong. Knowing how to raise a moral child, especially in today’s world, isn’t always easy. You may want to follow some of these tips to teach your child this important character trait.

Although morality is often defined in terms of religion, it is much more than a religious concept. Morals are also defined by society, philosophy, and conscience. They are the center of how people make ethical decisions.

What can parents do to ensure their children learn morals? Here are some suggestions:

* Be a good moral role model. It’s often said that when children are involved more is caught than taught. This means they’ll watch what you do, how you act and react to situations, and how moral you are to learn morality. By being a good role model, they’re more likely to follow your positive examples rather than ones you may not be proud of.

* You expect your children to be honest, so model honesty before them. You’ll have a hard time convincing your child honesty is important if you tell someone you can’t be somewhere because you’re sick. This sends a mixed message to your children, and may make your child think honesty isn’t as important as you say.

* Respect others. Children may begin treating others the way they see you treat those in your life. If you’re disrespectful your children may disrespectful.

* Know your own morals and values. Think about the things and people that are important to you. Use those as the basis for how you make decisions and as the starting point to determine the things you do.

* Do what you can to help your child develop a sense of their own worth: a strong sense of self. By having self-esteem, your child won’t have to get the approval of their peers. Instead, they will be able to make rational choices based on their values and self-worth.

* Help your child learn to think for themselves, which will allow them to make wise decisions rather than depending on the influence of others to make them. With the various external influences today – peers, television, movies, and songs – you want your children to know how to think on their own.

Children and teens that learn to make their own decisions and stand on their own two feet are more likely to do the right thing. They may also stand up for the underdog if they see someone being mistreated. Having strong moral principles will help your child make the right decisions.

Ultimately, as the parent, you have the most influence on your children’s moral development. Help them establish good self-esteem, to think for themselves, and model morality before them. They’ll see how important morality is to you and will follow in your footsteps.

Create a 4th of July Ceiling Kite

Tags: , , , , ,

Children love to fly kites, but that’s not the only thing you can do with them. You and your child can create a 4th of July ceiling kite to help them remember the fun of the holiday for children activities.

Perhaps you and your child have made kites before. If this is the case, you know how. In case you’ve never made a kite, or not since you were a child, these instructions should help you make a kite you and your child can be proud of.

You’ll need the following items to create a 4th of July ceiling kite:

* One 24” wooden dowel
* One 20” wooden dowel
* One piece of fabric – red, white, blue, or patriotic – at least 26” by 26”
* Tape or hot glue gun
* Lightweight kite string
* Craft knife
* Ruler
* Red, white, and blue ribbon

Make a cross out of the two sticks. Tie them together and put a drop of glue on the joint to make it stronger.

Cut a notch at the end of each stick making sure that each notch is deep enough to keep the string in place. Wrap the string around each notch twice, keeping the string tight. This will create the framework of the kite and should create a diamond.

After you’ve gone around each notch, move the string up to the center of the kite and make an “X” around the crossed sticks. Make another “X” with the string to keep it together. Tie it off and glue the string to the sticks.

Cut the fabric so that it’s at least an inch larger than the diamond. Wrap the fabric around the string and then tape or hot glue the ends to the fabric. Be sure the fabric is tight rather than loose.

Poke two small holes in the top and bottom points of the kite. Tie a piece of kite string, about two feet long, and tie a knot in each end. Tie a two foot piece of string on the bottom of the kite. Make bows and tie them in alternating colors about three inches apart on the string to make the tail. Tie the spool of string onto the string going from top to bottom as the flying string.

If your kite was made from a solid fabric, you can decorate the kite with paints, markers, or other fabric. Use patriotic symbols such as stars and stripes, eagles, or rockets. After you’ve taken your kite flying, you can hang it from your child’s ceiling. Using glow-in-the-dark paint or stickers to decorate the kite will help the designs stand out when the lights go out.

Hula Hoop and Jumping Rope Fun to Get You Moving

Tags: , , , , ,

With cut-backs in child education budgets, one of the areas to suffer is allowing children to have recess during the school day. You know how being physically active can help you feel better, look better, concentrate more, and be healthier than leading a sedentary life. The same is true for your children. Use hula hoops and jump ropes as a fun way to get you and your children moving at home.

Unstructured recess may be a thing of the past at your school, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give your children unstructured play at home. Purchasing play equipment like hula hoops, jump ropes, and balls can make active play something your children look forward to each day. Science has proven that having this type of equipment available may help your children be more active and play for longer periods of time.

You know increased activity can help stave off obesity in your children, so why not do what you can to help improve their health? Is there a better way to encourage them to get moving than by providing them with fun activities they can do? And, while you’re at it, why don’t you join in the fun with them?

What can you do with a hula hoop? Actually, you might be surprised. Obviously, you can use the hula hoop as it was intended. You swing your hips in a circular movement and try to keep the hoop moving. Did you know that using one of these hoops, especially if it has been weighted, is a great abdominal exercise? They can also be used as a prop in rhythmic dancing or gymnastics. You can also use them at different points on the body, so you can concentrate on separate areas and give them a great workout.

Jump ropes are also wonderful pieces of exercise equipment. Of course, if more than one person chooses to use it at once, you will probably want to get one for everyone in the family. Again, you can use these as intended, jumping rope, but you can also incorporate them into gymnastics or rhythmic dancing. If you’re not sure what you can do with a jump rope, take a look at double Dutch jump roping. You’ll be amazed at the way some athletes use a simple pair of ropes.

Find hula hoops and jump ropes at local department stores. If you don’t think those will stand up to use, you may want to look at school supply stores. If there aren’t any school supply stores nearby, you can always look online to find them. You may find other pieces of exercise equipment that you’ll be interested in, too.

Remember that the goal is to encourage your child to get active rather than sitting in front of a computer or television. Give them a couple of pieces of exercise equipment and they’re more likely to use them. If you really want to encourage them, let them see you use the equipment, too. There’s nothing like exercise to get you and your whole family healthier and quite possibly happier.

Personalized Child Safety Tattoos

Tags: , , , ,

It’s a parent’s worst nightmare. On a family trip to an amusement park, their child is separated from them and is lost. If that family had used personalized child safety tattoos, their child would have been able to go to a park employee and they could have been quickly reunited with one another.

You can explain to your child the importance of staying close to you when you’re out in public. However, even though you and your child do your best, it is still possible to get separated. Temporary tattoos can be used to help keep your children safe and give you peace of mind. Here’s how they work and why they’re such a great idea.

Temporary tattoos are a fun, colorful ID product that can be used to keep children safe. They come in a variety of tattoos. The tattoos, which remain on the skin for three to seven days even through bathing or swimming, can be used to provide a telephone number to contact in case a child gets lost or otherwise separated from a parent or caregiver. There are also temporary tattoos which alert others to emergency medical information.

Lost and Found temporary tattoos are perfect for children or adults with autism or another medical condition that makes verbal communication difficult. They attach emergency contact information directly to the skin. They cannot be removed in the same way as a lanyard and ID or a piece of jewelry.

Made of safe, non-toxic, and hypo-allergenic pigments, the temporary tattoos are FDA certified. Temporary tattoos are not to be used on or near the eyes. They are easily applied and can be removed with rubbing alcohol or baby oil.

Besides giving your peace of mind should your child be lost while out and about, they may actually save a child’s life. Suppose your child has a life-threatening allergy to peanuts or another substance. Wearing one of these temporary tattoos will enable teachers or others to contact someone who can help because the tattoos have an emergency number on them.

Even though parents do everything they can to ensure their children are safe, children can quickly move away from a parent or caregiver. They can slip away and truly be lost. If the child is young and doesn’t know their telephone number, temporary tattoos provide the information needed to get you and your child back together.

There are several temporary tattoo manufacturers. To find one, you can search for them online. A few possible manufacturers are Safety Tat or Tottoos, however, there are others. You can also check with local Child Advocacy Centers to see if they know of manufacturers of these personalized child safety tattoos.

How Can I Help My Toddler to Talk?

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Having a baby is a great experience. After a while, you can’t wait for them to be able to talk to you and tell you what they want. You may have a toddler that doesn’t talk well and wonder how you can help them talk for child development. These ten tips can give you ideas of ways to encourage your toddler to talk.

1. Use adult language. Speak to your baby in real words to give your baby a better understanding of how to talk rather than making up words or nonsensical sounds.

2. Talk directly to your toddler. Look at them while you talk. Spend time talking to them; ask them questions even if they don’t have a very big vocabulary.

3. Be sure to tell them what you’re doing. If it’s time to change their clothes for bedtime, tell them. “Off with your shoes. Remove your pants and shirt.” Repeating this each time you change them helps them learn to use labels for their clothing.

4. Read to them as often as possible. Picture dictionaries can introduce them to new words. Point to the pictures in the book and name each one. Read simple stories using expression in your voice for the different characters. Your toddler will love it!

5. Try not to talk or mumble to yourself which can confuse your toddler. They may begin to think that words are meaningless if someone isn’t responding when you talk.

6. Play repeating games with your toddler. Start out with simple words. Point to a toy they like and say “toy.” Ask them if they would like the toy and then ask them if they can say “toy.” If they try, praise them whether they can say the word or not. Then give them the toy. Repeat with other things they point to and indicate they want.

7. Leave the television off as much as possible. Parking your toddler in front of a TV for a short while won’t hurt them, but leaving them there for hours can. In fact, some experts have determined that watching television earlier than age two can be a contributing factor to developing Attention Deficit Disorder. If you can’t be with them physically, put them somewhere safe and let them play with their toys.

8. Be patient. Babies all learn at different rates so don’t get too discouraged if your toddler doesn’t learn to speak as quickly as another child. It may not seem like it, but your toddler will be talking when they’re ready. Of course, then you may wish they didn’t talk so much!

9. See the doctor. If you think your toddler is way behind their peers in speaking, you may want to see your child’s pediatrician. They will be able to test your toddler to see if there is a physical reason for them not speaking. If there is a problem, they will be able to give you the best advice for getting your toddler past the problem.

10. Love them as they are. If you put too much pressure on them to talk before they’re ready, it could do more harm than you realize. It’ll happen, just wait and see.

Try not to stress out about whether your toddler is talking or not. Unless your doctor gives you a reason why they won’t, you can expect your toddler to begin talking when they’re good and ready. Until then, talk to them, read to them, and keep on loving them!

Advantages of Family Volunteering

Tags: , , , ,

Listen in to the conversations you hear at the grocery store. You may hear one mother complain that her children often say “I want this” or “I want that.” Another parent may mention that they’re tired of how many different directions their family runs on a daily basis. Whether your family has the “I wants” or is rarely together, you may want to consider the advantages of family volunteering for children activities.

One of the many advantages of family volunteering is having your family work on a project together. Not only can you spend time with one another, but you help someone who is less fortunate than yourselves. If you look at it like that, it’s a win-win situation.

Perhaps your family is concerned about the environment. You can probably find environmental projects you can do in your own area. Call the local city park to see if they need help. They may ask you to help pick up litter, plant trees or flowers in flower beds, or place markers to identify the trees along a walking trail.

Another family volunteering activity you can do is to work at a soup kitchen or center for homeless people. They have to feed those staying at the shelter every day so they’d probably be thrilled to have someone come to the center to help cook, serve, or clean up after meals. Many people consider helping during the holidays but there are needs at these shelters and centers all year round.

Is anyone in your family handy with tools? You may want to volunteer as a family to work on a Habitat for Humanity home or some similar project. If you get involved when the project first starts and see it through completion, your family can feel proud of a job well done and see the joy on a deserving family’s face when they are handed the keys to their new home.

What are some other advantages to family volunteering?

* You’re teaching your children about giving to others rather than always asking for something.

* Volunteering allows children to become involved in their community in a tangible way.

* It teaches your family to become stronger, promotes positive values, and teaches them how to work as a team.

* Having your children volunteer while they’re young will probably encourage them to continue volunteering as an adult. They may even pass the volunteering tradition onto their own children.

* Family volunteering can be a lot of fun!

Bring your family together by volunteering. You can strengthen your family, have fun, and benefit others in the process.

The Pros and Cons of Home Education

Tags: , , , ,

Anyone who has homeschooled their children can tell you they have good days and they have bad days especially with child education. There are days when some homeschool parents may even wonder what on earth they’re doing. It’s on days like that many homeschooling parents wonder again about the pros and cons of home education.

The Pros of Home Education

Your child can work at their speed. Some children may be math whizzes who easily do algebra at home but are required to remain “at level” with the students in school classes. With home education, you can allow your child to excel in the areas they enjoy. There’s also nothing wrong with your child working on many different levels if that’s where their abilities are.

You can work with your child’s bent. Not all children learn in the same way. Some children are auditory learners, some hands-on learners, and some visual learners. Instead of providing the same type of teaching for every child in your home, you can determine how your child learns best and find a curriculum which will work with your child’s bent. You may find your child will enjoy learning more if they are being taught using their learning style.

You can watch your child relate to everyone around them. In public schools, children are separated by age; the only person older than them is their teachers. As they learn to deal with the world around them, they may have problems relating to people older or younger. Home educated children, on the other hand, normally can carry on a conversation and relate to people of all ages because they’re not segregated into age groups.

You have more control over what your child learns. Some people homeschool because of religious convictions. Others do so because they don’t want their children to be exposed to certain subjects in the way public schools generally handle them. As a parent who homeschools, you have more control over what your child learns, how they learn it, and when they learn it.

The Cons of Home Education

You’re together all the time. Let’s face it; too much of a good thing isn’t always good. When you’re together all the time, everyone can become overwhelmed and stressed by all the togetherness. Find activities your children can do away from you and this problem can be handled.

You may not have money for the curriculum you want. Homeschooling isn’t necessarily an inexpensive endeavor. In fact, some curriculums can be quite expensive. It is possible, however, to find free homeschool resources or you can purchase a used curriculum from other homeschoolers.

You may experience times of self-doubt, no matter how long you homeschool. It happens to some people who have homeschooled for years as well as to those new to homeschooling. If this is a problem, talk to other homeschool parents to get encouragement.

You may be concerned about your children not being around others. Socialization is one topic brought up when people say they’re considering homeschooling. While your children may be limited on a daily basis in who they interact with, many homeschooling families are involved in plenty of outside of the home activities such as scouting, religious, or community so their children can interact with others.

There are many pros and cons of home education. You can read through the above or talk with a homeschooling family to learn more about it. If you’re considering homeschooling, remember there are pros and cons to everything; you simply make the best decision you can based on the information you have.

Educational Family Nature Fun

Tags: , , , , ,

Children may complain about going to school every day, but there’s a way to sneak in something for child education at other times. Family nature fun can teach as well as be enjoyable for everyone involved. The following ideas may be perfect to get your children learning and having fun at the same time.

Seed dispersal

Teach your children about how seeds are dispersed by taking them on a hike through a field or grassy area. You’ll need extra adult sized socks you won’t mind if they get dirty. Have your children place the extra socks on the outsides of their shoes and then ask them to walk around the field or grassy area for a couple of minutes. Let them run, skip, or hop to their heart’s content. Then bring them back and have them carefully remove the socks over a paper bag or a piece of white craft paper.

Your children will notice seeds that were on their socks. Ask them to draw pictures of the seeds and then discuss how seeds attach to clothing as one way of moving from one area to another. You can also explain other ways seeds are dispersed and how they grow in new areas.

Make a rainbow

This is probably one of the easiest ways to teach your children about the visible light spectrum. Take a junk CD out in the sunshine. Ask your children to hold the silver side up and move it until they can see the rainbow. Can they identify the different colors of the rainbow?

Back inside, fill a shallow pan with water. Place it near a window with direct sunlight. Put a mirror into the pan and slant it toward the sunlight so that it creates a refracted beam of light which makes a rainbow. Hold a piece of white paper up to the refracted sunbeam and watch the children’s faces as they see how you’ve made a rainbow. You can then teach them the pneumonic device – Roy G Biv – to help them remember the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Petting zoo

Springtime is a great time to take your children to a petting zoo. You can take advantage of their interest in baby animals to teach them about the different families of animals. They may not remember that cats and dogs are mammals, but you’ll be planting seeds of knowledge that they may recall when they begin learning about animals in their future education.

Teaching doesn’t have to be boring and dry. By incorporating educational family nature fun, you can pass along knowledge while your children are enjoying themselves. What better combination is there for encouraging your children to learn?

Start Your Own Home Gym!

Tags: , , , ,

Were you one of the millions who made losing weight a New Year’s resolution? How are you doing? If you’re having problems making it to the gym, why not start your own home gym and include the kids as well for some exciting children activities?

Let’s face it, having a gym membership is no guarantee that your fitness goals will be reached. In fact, having to pack up and drive to the gym makes it harder to stick with a new exercise program. If you’re able to create a home gym, you’re much more likely to adhere to the program and be a success.

If you’ve already bought an annual membership, it may be a good idea to take advantage of it as much as you can. Head out to the gym to see what machines are there. The trainers at the gym will be able to teach you how to properly use each one. After you’re comfortable using the machines at the gym you’ll have a better idea of what machines you’d like for your home gym. This will also ensure that you’re using any equipment you buy properly and that you can teach others to use it correctly, too.

Perhaps there are others in your family who would benefit from losing some weight or getting healthier. Setting up a home gym would be much cheaper than paying for an annual gym membership for each family member, especially if you’re unlikely to actually use it.

Set up any exercise equipment you buy in a specific location where it will be out of the way but easily accessible to those who want to use it. Not only can you or other family members shape up, everyone can improve their health as they lose weight.

Of course, most exercise equipment is not designed for children, so you’ll want to be sure that children never use it on their own. There should always be an adult supervising, to ensure they’re using the equipment safely and properly. In fact, to be sure children don’t use the equipment without your permission you may want to keep it in a room you can lock.

Design your home gym so you can do all exercises without a spotter unless your partner intends to work out with you. You can still include a treadmill, stationary bike, rebounder, dumbbells or bands, rubber mats, and possibly a television with DVD player to be able to work on aerobic exercises, as well.

You’ll definitely want to do more than weight training; you’ll want to include aerobic exercise, too. This can be done with an exercise video, or by walking or running outside. Try to choose exercises that you enjoy and that you know you’ll do no matter what the weather outside.

No matter which equipment you choose for your home gym, remember it won’t do you or anyone else in your family any good if you don’t use it. You can get your weight back under control as well as help lower your blood pressure and reduce problems associated with some diseases like diabetes. And it will help you feel better.

How to Balance Your Daily Life as a Homeschool Mom

Tags: , , ,

Parents often have busy lives which require them to juggle more than one task at a time. This is no different for homeschooling parents. If you’re thinking about homeschooling for child education, you may wonder how to balance your daily life as a homeschool mom. It is possible and these tips can help you.

Some families handle day-to-day life by creating detailed charts or schedules for each family member. They know what time breakfast is, how long to plan for each homeschool subject, what time they’ll eat lunch every day, how much free time they have, and when they’ll eat dinner. However, there’s no reason to believe this type of scheduling is necessary in order to balance your daily life as a homeschooling family.

Other families are opposite of the ones described above. They live life by the seat of their pants. They don’t plan elaborate schedules but prefer to take life as it comes. They may keep a calendar so they know about important appointments or events, but that’s as close as they get to a schedule. For them, living life one day at a time is about experiencing life as it happens rather than depending upon a piece of paper to dictate when they do things.

Does this mean that one method of balancing daily life is better than the other? Of course not! Part of the benefit of homeschooling is learning what works best for your own family. This may take time and some trial and error, but you will soon find yourself falling into a routine of sorts that is best for you.

Create an area in your home where you have access to good books and music. Having good resources around gives your child someplace to turn when they want to learn something. And the benefit is if they are interested on their own, they’re learning without realizing it. This method is often referred to as delight-driven or “unschooling.” It enables children to learn what interests them and allows Mom to be able to concentrate on taking care of the home rather than sitting with the child while they learn. Of course, even homeschooling moms know it’s important to be available when their child needs help, but they don’t feel obligated to remain right there with them.

Use real life events to help your child learn. If you’re cooking dinner, have your homeschooled child help you determine how much milk is needed if the recipe calls for one-third cup of something but you’re tripling the recipe. When you plan a trip to the grocery store, have your child write out the list of items needed. Then, while you’re walking through the store, have them help you determine which box potatoes is cheaper based on the cost and number of ounces are in the box. Both of these activities teach your child how math is important for daily life.

Get your children to help you with household duties. They can learn how to cook, sort clothing, do laundry, and stack dishes in a dishwasher. Not only will they be learning skills which will be helpful for their future, it will also make your job easier; you can also count the time they’re learning those skills as home economics - whether they’re boys or girls.

There are many things to can do to balance your daily life as a homeschool mom. Don’t feel like you have to do everything yourself. Let your partner work with your children on some of the subjects you feel uncomfortable teaching. Have your children help you with household duties. After some time you will be able to find what works best for your family so your life is more or less balanced.

Smart Ways of Helping Children to Overcome Fear of Dogs

Tags: , , , , ,

Dogs are often called man’s best friend. This may be partially true; however, that doesn’t mean they are friendly for child safety. In fact, some children are afraid of them. If this describes a child you know, you can use these smart ways of helping children overcome the fear of dogs.

Despite the fact they’re animals, dogs can be very similar to humans. You can tell when a dog is being playful or when they want to be left alone. Some dogs even smile at you because they’re happy to see you. When it comes to helping your child overcome the fear of dogs, it’s a good idea to begin by teaching them to read dog behavior.

If your child is afraid of dogs, take them to a pet store. They will have puppies and dogs for the child to look at but they stay behind a glass where the child and animal are safe. This will allow your child to see the animal without fear of being hurt.

Don’t try to force your child to pet an animal. They may have good reason for their fears. Let them watch dogs from a distance. This will allow them to see how dogs interact with other children and adults. It will help them to recognize when there is danger and when there is not.

After they become comfortable seeing the animal from behind the glass, ask if you can see one of the calmer animals. The sales person will bring dog into an enclosed room where you can get to know the animal. They will remain with you and will be able to help protect your child. They may also have some more ideas for helping your child overcome their fear of dogs.

Teach your child that when a dog is wagging its tail or its whole body, there usually is nothing to fear except if the dog inadvertently knocks the child down. Explain to the child that the dog is being friendly and that it means them no harm. This can be especially important if your child has been bitten or nipped at before.

On the other hand, if a dog comes running toward them with their ears back and barking, the child is fully justified in being scared. The child needs to know to stand still rather than run, however. Running may be an automatic response, but running will only encourage the dog to chase the child. Helping your child recognize the difference between a dog that’s friendly and one that’s not can make all the difference in the world as to how they respond to them.

When being introduced to a new dog, have your children follow these steps:

* Stand still; let the dog sniff at them.
* Let them look to you for cues as to whether the dog is friendly or not.
* After they become comfortable, or at least less uneasy with the dog being near them, teach them to hold out the back of their hand for the dog to smell.
* Finally, when they’re ready, tell them to move slowly and then gently pet the dog on the back of the neck or the head.

It is possible to help a child overcome their fear of dogs. These smart ways may give you information you need to help your child. If you’re still unsure about introducing your child to dogs, ask a veterinarian or your child’s pediatrician for more ideas.

Kids Safety In Virtual Worlds

Tags: , , , ,

Virtual worlds are all the rage and parents’ concern in ensuring child safety in virtual worlds is easily understood. With toddlers and preschoolers it is very easy for parents to ensure the child’s safety, simply open an account and link it to your child’s to monitor safe play. The situation is a little bit different with teenagers who are very techno savvy and know their way around the internet.

Our research has uncovered an excellent and safe site that children aged 7-14 can enjoy. The site strongly advocates safety practices and have a number of safety features in place to protect your children. The site has a dedicated parents’ page and provides information that counts. Some of the safety features include: filtering of telephone numbers and addresses; no URL links; no vulgarity and private messaging; reporting features and moderators in place to police the site. Best of all parents can actually request the chat logs dating back 90 days to ensure kids safety in virtual worlds.

Kids safety in virtual worlds is the responsibility of the parents. One way of making sure that your child is not misusing their virtual world privileges is to talk to your kid. Discuss their online experiences as you would their daily activities. Do not be judgmental, listen to what they have to say and provide guidance in a calm manner. Since virtual worlds duplicate school room behavior, bullying, sexual communication and harassment maybe part of the virtual world. Despite the language filters that are in place, kids have found a way around the filters by using alternative text. Communication is vital – unless your child is honest with you, you will probably never know what goes on in their virtual world. Visit the site, look at avatars, screen names, profiles, social network sites visited and the type of friends they are socializing with.

Children are trusting souls and often share passwords. You need to educate your child on the importance of how much harm shared passwords can cause. Friends can sometimes stop being friends and use passwords to misrepresent your child. Teenagers probably will not take you seriously, but you need to create awareness. Sow the seed to get them thinking!

Take kids safety in virtual worlds seriously - visit the sites your child is using and examine the safety features and tools provided. Usually there is a safety page on the good sites designed for parents. Go over the safety features with your child to make sure they know how to report abuse and block offenders. Kids also need to be taught the importance of correctly representing themselves when registering on the sites and to use the safety features provided.

What Is The Role Of A Parent?

Tags: , , , ,

Child development in today’s world is probably one of the most difficult tasks of all. What is the role of a parent? Where do you draw the line on authority? Who does what in their role as parents? What are your responsibilities as a parent? Parents today need all the help they can get and this article seeks to answer some of the more baffling questions that plague modern day parents.

What is the role of a parent in the old fashioned context was for the father to take on the authoritative role of provider and protector and the mother to nurture. We would be hard pressed to maintain this concept in a society such as ours. Both parents work and more often than not single parenting seems to be the norm.

Children need to know and accept that parents are in charge. Raise your children on love and teach them the art of respecting people. Honesty, truthfulness, sincerity are virtues you can inculcate in your child with the right kind of upbringing. Teaching your child morals and values in life is not something that is picked up as your child grows, rather something that is taught from the knee high stage onward.

What is the role of a parent? It certainly isn’t a dictator! Authoritative parenting requires parents to be firm in raising children, rearing them on love and warmth, teaching and guiding, avoiding harsh discipline and being clear in what they expect from the child, yet flexible when necessary. In order to be a good parent you have to walk a fine line between overindulging and overbearing in your treatment of children.

Families that make the effort to have family time sessions, share information, fun and laughter at mealtimes, and participate in the decision making will continue to strengthen the bond that binds. There is a very popular saying, “Families that pray together, stay together.” I would like to stretch that to include those families that share and care build an interdependency and oneness that continues to grow over time. Treat your children with respect and they will learn to respect you. If you have older children, involve yourself in their lives without intruding. Smaller children are easier to manage, get them involved even in your shopping activities and weekly cleaning and you will find they make willing helpers.

Children need to feel loved and wanted and that is the main focus of what is the role of a parent in a child’s life.

Parents As Teachers For Life

Tags: , , , , ,

Parents without doubt make the best teachers and this article on parents as teachers for life concentrates on the importance of child education.

Parents’ serve as a child’s first teachers and help shape a child’s future as well. The morals and values you impart to your child will help serve as guidelines all through their growing years and into adulthood.

Parents as teachers for life, is one of the really important aspects of parenting and if you get the grounding right you will be doing your child the biggest possible favor. What this means is your child’s education does not begin with kindergarten, it begins right there in your home in the pre-school years. The most crucial learning period for the child is before it enters school and parents have to teach by leading by example in both word and deed.

Given below are some ideas for helping to develop the various skills a child needs to face the world.

The early years of a child’s life are the formative years, where learning comes easily and very quickly to the child; you can help your child to develop excellent literacy skills by reading and talking out loud to the child. Ask children questions and get them to identify objects; this will help their speaking skills to develop. Read out loud from picture story books, point out objects and identify them to teach the child.

You can develop the child’s social skills by being positive and showing warmth in your behavior both inside your home and outside with other people. Take the time to study your child’s individual personality – each child is unique. Build on what you observe modifying your discipline style, always showing much love and support for the child. Make the effort to get your child involved in group activities and play dates. Talk to your child all the time he or she is with you, engaging a child in conversation asking them about their observations and thoughts keeps the little mind busy and develops interactive skills. Your support as a parent is very essential for developing healthy social behavior.

Everything you do and say, the way you react to your child’s questions and need for attention, all go towards building positive behavioral traits in the child. Warm, responsive parents who constantly make time for their children will find that their children are less prone to aggression and anti social behavior.

Always leave room for failure, don’t push children beyond their limits and remember that parents as teachers for life have a huge responsibility to getting it right, no second chances here!
