How to Choose Educational Toys

Tags: , , , ,

Being a parent these days is difficult enough without having to worry about what effect toys have on your child’s mental growth and development. This is a problem solved greatly by sites that specialize in educational toys rather than the usual guns and dolls.

Some of the great old fashioned wooden toys are seriously in demand these days and, like their predecessors, will probably become family heirlooms and collectors items. Yes indeed some of the contemporary toys of today will in fact become the classic toys of tomorrow.

A great leap forward in children’s toys though is the exponential growth of the number of science and discovery type toys which show up the old chemistry sets of yesteryear with all sorts of exciting experiments to perform including building your own operational rocket!

Preschool toys now include wondrous electronic gizmo’s included in them which makes the activity toy learning market one of the biggest growth areas due to the cheap cost today of electronics. Young babies even get to kick and slap things just to make a noise though so perhaps this is education in the wrong direction.

Fisher Price toys is still going strong and has a range of offerings from the humble building block type of toy through to the most sophisticated gadgets on the planet as far as kids playthings is concerned.

Musical toys of old though like the eternal music box seem to be on the decline and are being superseded by such things as full blown synth organs and even karaoke machines.

Without a doubt the children of today are very much spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping for the right educational toy or otherwise right from the early learning toddler and baby toys through to the near laptop computer standard of the Leapfrog learning systems.

Whatever happened to classic meccano and standard Lego?

These days if you go into a toy store even these old favourites have become technical marvels with kits to build robots that really do interact and can even sense and see.

Cowboys and cowgirls on their make believe horses and ponies (commonly known as a Space Hopper!) can upgrade now to an electronic full size pony which, wait for it, even talks!

As for outside toys there are now electric powered vehicles to be had from scooters and motorcycles through to full blown 4×4 jeeps of every description shape and color. These could even be described as educational for the simple fact that it gets young children fully prepared for the day they actually own their own full size street legal version of these ride on toys.

Many children love the idea of their own home too and there are also many plastic and wood chalets which can be acquired in order for them to learn how to keep house in the future!

The true education about the toys of today however is really about education of the parent by the children on how to put that hand in the pocket and pay for these educational wonder toys in the first place.

School Uniforms

Tags: , , , , , ,

Some people believe school uniforms are the only way to go when discussing a child education. Others believe they hamper a child’s self expression and should not be forced upon children. Regardless of the opinion, the use of uniforms in today’s schools as long been an intense topic among parents and faculty alike.

Experts say that violence in schools is often caused by differences in style among the students, and that uniforms have been proven to drastically reduce violence by removing the differences. The wearing of uniforms makes for a less stressful learning environment, which in turn lessens the tensions that lead to fighting.

Kids can be cruel. If one does not possess attire the wealthy student population considers ‘cool’, they will bully the poor kid, reducing his or her self esteem to terrible lows. This is usually the root of most violence and other teen tragedies, such as suicides and drug use. These disastrous results need never occur, and one way to deter them is the use of uniforms.

Sometimes, gangs crop up in schools. When they do, uniform clothing can help keep gang activity in check. By putting members of different gangs into the same clothes, you eliminate some of the hostility and gain some measure of peace.

Students can have their sense of self worth and self confidence impacted by the use of uniforms. When students wear uniforms, some schools make them act in a civil and respectable manner everywhere they go. This can raise a student’s opinion of themselves by showing them that respect can be gained by conducting yourself correctly.

Regular clothing causes far too many distractions. A student who worries about the logo splashed across his chest or jeans is not worrying about his next test. Fashion can mess up a student’s priorities and cause their studies to suffer.

Of course, uniforms are much easier to manage than regular clothes. A bunch of uniforms are much easier to organize than a lot of different clothing. Plus, they make a closet look nice and organized.

When kids grow out of uniforms, they can donate them to other kids or recycle them within the family. Uniforms are meant to instill a sense of sameness in children; they make kids focus on what’s important and not what’s popular. Doing this makes for a happier kid and a more successful student.

5 Ways to Improve Child Behavior Problems

Tags: , , , ,

Does your child exhibit bad behavioral issues? Once a child gets away with a little bad behavior, it becomes difficult to bring them under control. The parent must always keep the child in order. This article will teach you 5 simple ways to improve child behavioral problems.

1) Analyze the Specified Situation

A simple common sense method is to first decide what is bad and good behavior. What is meant by this is for you to understand your child’s bad behavior. Not everything is straight forward. Sometimes a child will be acting out for a little more attention. This typically runs true when dealing with a middle child. Also with this method, you do not want to use the same solution to the same situation. Take a step back and understand why your child is acting out. In other words, choose your battles.

2) Develop some Type of Behavioral Chart

Over the years dealing with my kids, I have found that a behavioral chart will work wonders. Image a 6 year old hearing that they will get a reward for behaving properly. Just the word “reward” makes a child’s mind go wild with excitement. What I did was reward my kids with trips to the zoo or even extra play time outdoors. One mistake I often see parents doing is giving candy or edible treats. There is a strong possibility that down the road, that child in question will overeat and gain weight. What you will need to do is sit down and work out a couple scenarios that will work for your particular situation.

3) Be Serious about Your Instructions

When you play around while trying to discipline your child, you are setting yourself up for failure. If I joked around when my kids were out of line, they would walk all over me. There is clearly a thin line between parenting and friends. Keep in mind that children look to their parents to be parents. The best friend thing comes second. You have to create concrete rules and follow them with an iron fist. There was one particular day when my oldest son decided to stay out late way past curfew. I had to stand firm and discipline him because the younger ones would follow exactly what he did. To say the least, he never stayed out past curfew again.

4) Count to 10

This is by far one of my favorite methods of cracking down on bad behavior problems. I saw a woman in a restaurant tell her child to quiet down and the kid just got louder. The next thing she did was count slowly to ten. It was not the fact that she counted, but it was the way she did it. After five, her voice seemed to get angrier and the kid was silent before she even got to eight. If you are going to use this, what you need to do is show that which each second that passes, the consequence for the child’s actions will only get worse. There is not kid I know that wants to suffer a consequence from a loud angry parent.

5) Create Proper Time out Spots

This final method really reminds me of my childhood. Whenever I acted out, my parents would sit me in a corner for about five minutes. The most annoying thing was the particular spot they chose. It was just a plain wall with nothing on it and pure silence. To be perfectly honest, I thought about that spot each time I thought of annoying my younger brothers. The point is not to send your child to their room, but to discipline them. In their rooms they have toys, games, comics, and other things to make them happy. In the corner or time out spot, they have time to reflect on what they have done. This will make them also think twice before acting out in any fashion.

The conclusion I want you to understand is that discipline needs to be strict and straight to the point. Think of this as your child’s potty training days. If you play with them during potty time, they will want you to always be there when they need to do it. Just remember children who exhibit bad behavioral issues may need more parental guidance. Try different methods other than the ones listed because different families require different solutions.

Child behavior problems need to be taken care of immediately. Once they go out of hand, it is very hard to conquer. For more free article, strategies, and e-books please visit Positive Parenting Style today!

Goldfish Make Ideal First Pets For Kids

Tags: , , , ,

If your kid wants his or her fist pet, then think about a goldfish. Goldfish make ideal first pets for kids and there are many reasons for this. For one, your kid will have to take on the responsibility of looking after the fish. This will inculcate the sense of responsibility in him or her.

Secondly, it is not that expensive to maintain a goldfish when you compare it to the expense related to a dog or cat. The house will have a clean and quiet pet and there will be no unnecessary noise or disturbance. If you get your kid a puppy or kitten, it will require special care and attention and this can work out to be more expensive than you thought. In addition, you would have to cope with toilet training, barking or mewing and scratching. Besides, although the pet will be for your kid, you will end up looking after a dog or cat. But with a goldfish, you kid can take care of it all by himself or herself.

While there are many varieties of aquarium fish, go for a goldfish as a pet for your kid. Not only are they beautiful to look it, you will not be spending a bomb in feeding and looking after it. Goldfish is a cold water fish and you will not have to spend money on buying lights to heat up the aquarium. The only requirement is a large enough tank to allow the fish ample space to swim about freely. Also, do remember that goldfish do produce a lot of waste, so make sure you are around to help your kid clean up the tank. Do not get taken in by fish bowls as goldfish can grow quite fast and very soon the bowl will become useless. And, if you intend keeping several fish in the bowl, they will grow fast and then suffocate and die due to lack of oxygen and water.

Initially when the fish is small, you can keep it in a bowl. However, make sure that you get an aquarium soon. If you want, you can also release the goldfish into a pond in your garden.

When purchasing the goldfish, get your kid to select tank after getting all the necessary advice from the pet store. Make sure you also buy all the required supplies. Then set up the tank. Make sure that the water pH is suitable for the fish. Decorate the tank with plants and rocks. Then release the fish into the tank using the correct procedure of gradually opening and closing the bag until the pH levels of the water, the one in the bag and the one in the tank, are nearly the same.

Thereafter, make sure you give the proper instructions to your kid on how to feed the fish. Stand over them and keep a watch for the first few times. If you are satisfied, then leave this responsibility to your kid. However, make sure you keep reminding him or her about feeding the fish. Also, get your kid to select a name for the fish.

The Best and Worst Pets For Your Kids

Tags: , , , ,

Looking for a furry friend for your kids? Or maybe a slimy one? Before you bring pets for kids into your family find out which animals makes the best… and worst pets for little ones. (You might be surprised at which animals fail the test!)

Fancy Rat - Best

Fancy Rats make great pets for kids… that is if parents can get past their “eek” factor. While they require a large caging area, if kept in a busy room of the home the rat will bond with the family and become a member of your clan in no time. Fancy Rats also enjoy being held and are actually highly intelligent.

Fun Fact: In Victorian times rich women would often take attic rats as pets and domesticate them. They would even dress them up!

Fish - Best and Worst

Goldfish can live up to 25 years… but usually they don’t. A fish is a great starter pet for kids because they are easy to manage and require little cost to keep. However, goldfish are notorious for going “belly up”… so if you have a sensitive child they could be a crying session waiting to happen.

Turtle - Worst

Turtles are among the most desired pets to children. They are adorable and easy to handle. However, they pose a hidden danger that many parents aren’t aware of. Turtles actually carry semolina. Cleaning the cage of a turtle or handling one without proper sanitation can lead to a doctor visit.

Dog - Best

Dogs are perhaps the favorite pet of families around the world. Not only do they have a generally long lifespan they also make fast friends with their owners.

While dogs are wonderful pets some are better for kids than others. Small dogs are often not a good choice for children as they require delicate handling. Their tiny bodies are also easily tripped on as children run and play. This can be dangerous not only for the dog but also for the children.

Golden Retrievers make excellent family dogs and English Bulldogs are another great addition. They are very loyal and good with children - however, they are very protective if strangers enter the picture.

Ponies - Worst

While ponies are great fun they are very difficult to manage. They require lots of space to run, a daily routine and they have a high cost of feed and maintenance.

Goats - Best and Worst

Goats are very intelligent. In fact, many goat owners argue that they are even more loyal than dogs. You can teach them tricks… and as a bonus they mow your grass and provide you with milk. However, the thing about a goat that requires a second thought is the fact that they are little escape artists and they do require a daily routine.

Lizards - Worst

Lizards are very difficult for kids to handle. Not because they cannot be handled but because they are VERY fast. Lizards also require the feeding of bugs and the use of heat lamps so the upkeep can be rather intensive. Heat lamps are also a cause of concern for some parents who fear they will get too hot and set fire.

Guinea Pigs - Best

While they smell to Timbuktu Guinea Pigs are actually a great pet for kids. They enjoy being held, have a 2 to 5 year lifespan and aren’t known to bite as often as hamsters. Guinea Pigs are also easier to handle as they don’t require as delicate a touch as mice and hamsters.

Ferrets - Worst

Ferrets are cute… but they give off a musky scent and even worse they can give you a very bad bite. This is especially worrisome to parents of small children. Bites can easily become infected by little hands. So while ferrets are adorable and we loved them in Rikki Tikki Tavi… until kids are older we’d steer clear.

When it comes to pets only you and your family can decide what pet is right for you. While a dog might be a great choice for one family, a snake might suit another just fine.

Sit down with your family and decide what kind of responsibility you can comfortably take on, plan for bumps in the road and whatever you choose… choose to love it for life. When you do it will pay you back by loving you for a lifetime.

It is important to distinguish in between mischievous kids and a kid behavior issue. Certainly, young child conduct problems undoubtedly are a bit less complicated compared to adolescent behavior problems. So, discipline and control ought to be suitable for the kid’s age.

You may perhaps have to deal with a child behavior problem in case your kid’s behavior does not meet the actual expectations within your family, or when it is disruptive. Safety and Style of Kids Riding Boots

Tags: , , , , ,

Kids riding boots were created for children that love the outdoors as well as riding horses. These boots will come in many styles and will vary by manufacturers. Before purchasing a pair of boots for a child the parent should be aware of what to look for.

The soles on the bottom of the kids boot should come with some form of non slip surface. This will help ensure child safety when they are climbing on and off of the horse. Some form of ankle support from a boot will also help to protect the child’s foot if they should happen to trip, stumble or fall.

For the look of a true farm hand there are rubber kids riding boots. These boots are the traditional knee length boot and can help protect the lower portion of the child’s leg during riding.

Quality rubber kids riding shoes will have non slip soles on them to keep the child safe in all types of outdoor weather. The inside of the boot will be lined with a mixture of knit and canvas. A kid should wear heavier socks with the rubber boots to help keep feet warm in cooler months.

Cowboy boots are often worn by children while out riding. These kids riding shoes offer some support to the ankle when worn and will help protect the shins as well. Authentic style cowboy boots are usually created with the use of real leather, brown or black, with rubber bottom soles.

Some soles of the cowboy kids riding boots will be made with a mixture of rubber and solid wood. The rubber on the sole is there to help give traction and provide a non slip surface. Cushioned insoles found within the boot will give the child comfort for hours of continuous wear.

A paddock style kids riding boot resemble the look of a regular work boot. These shoes are quickly becoming one of the more popular styles for kids today. Some manufacturers will use synthetic materials to create this boot so that they are completely waterproof.

Paddock style boots will either come with laces or they will include a zipper type closure. These kids riding boots can be found in the popular colors of black and brown.

Happy Parent = Happy Family

Tags: , , , ,

Parenting and child care aren’t easy jobs. If someone tells you it is, they obviously aren’t a parent! As a parent, you may be involved in many things – caring for the home, children, working outside of the home, and possibly volunteering. You may not have the time to care for your own needs, but it’s important that you do; a happy parent equals a happy family.

Take time out to pursue your own hobby or interest. Nearly every parenting book will espouse the need of parents to pursue some of their own interests to avoid burn-out. Perhaps you played a sport before becoming a parent. Being active will keep you healthy, show your children how to be healthy through activity, and increase endorphins in your body which will improve your mood.

Include your children in your hobby. Maybe you loved to roller skate as a teen. It may be time to take up skating again. Get skates for the whole family and everyone can have fun together.

Maybe your interests lie in another direction. Are you fixing up a room in the house? Children can learn how to help with do-it-yourself projects as well. They generally like painting even if they can’t reach the ceiling. Why not let them help? You’ll be able to share your interest with your child and get more accomplished at the same time.

Give yourself a time out. This might be associated primarily with disobedient children, but time outs can be a great idea for helping you to de-stress, which can definitely improve how you feel. This can also help you be a better parent because you’ll be calmer and more able to handle your children.

How do you know when you need a time out? Here are some indicators:

* You might talk louder
* You may clench your teeth
* You may feel your heart race
* You may feel your muscles tighten

If your children are safe, try leaving the situation. You can also ask another adult to keep an eye on them until you’ve cooled off. Go to your room or the bathroom where you can be alone for a few minutes. Take some deep breaths and then call a friend to help you talk thing through before returning to the stress-causing situation. When you’ve calmed down, you’ll be able to handle the situation better.

It’s important to realize you can’t do things for others – whether partner, children, or boss – if you’re tired, worn out, and frazzled. The old saying goes, “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” That may apply to parents in general, so do what you can to make yourself happy. Experts agree a happy parent equals a happy family.

Parents with children in school need to stay on their toes to help them succeed socially and schooling wise. There are lists of ways for parents to help child education and you need to invest time and effort in learning and practicing the suggested methods. This article focuses on how to get your child to discuss school and the happenings of the day. Without this information you will not be in a position to help the child.

There are lists of ways for parents to help their kids in school and some general ideas have been discussed in this article.

It does not matter what age group your child belongs to – don’t pounce on your children the moment they walk through the door to find out about tests, grades and other school stuff. Younger children are usually more willing to discuss what happened at school, eager in fact to share information. This is not the case with older children especially teenagers. You have to give the children time to unwind first. Choose general topics to talk about and give them something to eat and drink, children always fare better on full stomachs. Avoid being authoritative and forceful, your children need to feel comfortable confiding in you.

It is always good for parents to be aware of the teachers, friends, classrooms, school layout and subject matter that concern their children. In this way you can ask specific close ended questions that will give you more than monosyllabic answers. Stay involved by reading the school letter, talking or emailing teachers and chatting with the parents of their friends. There is no need to be nosy, just diplomatic.

You have to be patient and understanding with your children in order to help them in school. A parent who is always losing their cool becomes hard to approach. Encourage openness and try to keep discussions open between the child and both parents. Be aware of the nuances of your child’s speech and on the look out for social or academic problems that the child maybe facing. In other words learn to read between the lines but don’t go off tangent at any given opportunity. Be supportive, show love and kindness when helping a child deal with school issues.

With smaller children you may have to provide solutions to the problems that arise in their small world. Teach them problem solving skills and possible responses to the problems they face. Consider the child’s maturity level and stage of development before bursting into speech. With older children they probably already have the answers on how to handle problems and are just seeking parental support. Serious issues need to be addressed to the teacher to get their insights on how best to handle the matter. However, you need to know when to intervene and when to gently suggest solutions to your children.

There are endless lists of ways for parents to help their kids in school and remember practice makes perfect!

13 teams attending the 20th Annual International Snow Sculpture Championships

Experience the visual wonderment of the creation and exhibition of snow art especially for children activities. The Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships return to Breckenridge for the 20th year from January 26-31, 2010.

Thirteen teams from around the globe have been invited to compete from seven countries including Canada (two teams), China, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Mexico, Russia and the USA. The United States teams invited include Alaska, Colorado (Breckenridge and Loveland), Idaho, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Snow Sculpting is attended annually by more than 30,000 people of all ages from across the USA and the world.
Each year, four-person teams are assigned 12-foot-tall, 20-ton blocks of machine-made Colorado snow. These teams work within a five-day period to create their sculptures. From these blocks of snow, the teams often craft enormous pieces of whimsy, although some deliver powerful political or social commentary.
The finished pieces are achieved after a total of 65 intense hours of work without the use of power tools, internal support structures or colorants - just the ingenuity of the sculptors and a medium that lends itself, if only temporarily, to the persuasion of hand tools.
When the sculptures are finished on Saturday, January 30, a panel of well-known artists and patrons of the arts serve as judges. Awards are presented to the first, second and third place sculptures on Sunday, January 31. Awards are also given for People’s Choice, Kids’ Choice and Artists’ Choice. There are no cash prizes; the artists instead revel in the reward of hard work, forged friendships, freedom of artistic expression and the satisfaction of long hours of preparation that lead to the event.
No one would have guessed 20 years ago that the first International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge would have grown into the renowned world-class event it is today, and that the founders of the event would still be passionately sculpting for Team Breckenridge 20 years later.

Motivating Preschoolers to Be Active

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Many preschoolers are active from the time they get up until the time their head hits the pillow at night. Perhaps you don’t have trouble motivating preschoolers to be active, but are they moving at an appropriate child development level? Will their movement help build their body or are they merely whirling dervishes?

free-online-adventure-games
By motivating preschoolers to be active when they’re young, you may be able to encourage a love of fitness that can last a lifetime. How do you go about doing so? Here are some ideas which may lead them to love being active.

Activity at Home

In the same way you may go to work, play is a child’s work. Allow your preschooler plenty of free time to play and use their imagination. Actually, you probably won’t have to do much motivating to get your preschooler to be active, but are they active for a minimum of an hour each day?

Find things your preschooler will have fun doing that will keep them active. Instead of taking them on a stroll around the local track, why not take them on a hike through the woods. Help them notice the different animals in the woods, toss rocks into a stream, or collect different leaves. This will make the walk much more enjoyable than trudging around a track.

Take into consideration your child’s skill level when trying to find activities for them. You wouldn’t ask a toddler who’s barely walking to run up and down a basketball court. Teach them to throw and catch large balls before encouraging them to catch a baseball.

Activity at School

Does your child have access to a playground if they attend preschool or daycare? Maybe all they have is a large yard. That’s really all they need if there is room to run, roll, and dance around. It’s not necessary to have several pieces of athletic equipment - a couple of large balls, hoola hoops, and plenty of space is enough.

The Need for Activity

One of the main reasons preschoolers need to be active is that being active helps their body on many levels. It helps build strong bones and muscles. Activity also improves large and fine motor skills as well as encouraging preschoolers to be healthy.

Consider games you played as a child. Many of them had you running, jumping, and skipping. Think about the fun your preschooler could have playing Hide and Seek, Simon Says, Follow the Leader, and Freeze Tag. There are so many great active games; you are sure to find one your preschooler will enjoy.

You may not really have to do much when it comes to motivating preschoolers to be active. The problem may actually be in getting them to stop. Help them have fun while they’re active and they’re very likely to develop a love of physical activity that will translate into a love of being fit as an adult.

Children having learning disabilities face difficulties with reading, writing, spelling, reasoning, recalling and organizing information without any help or if taught in the conventional ways. That does not suggest that they are less smart than other children. In fact, there are quite a lot of examples which prove that they can be more intelligent and smart than their peers.

There are a variety of learning disabilities in children. Read on some of the common learning disabilities in children.

* Dyslexia – It is a language based disability in which a child faces the problem of understanding written words. It is also referred as reading disability or reading disorder and is the most common of the learning disabilities in children.

* Dyscalculia – It is a mathematical disability in which a child faces difficulty in solving arithmetic problems and grasping the various concepts of mathematics. It is a complex disability and requires the intervention of skillful teachers. Arithmetic difficulties can be as pervasive as reading disabilities and demand similar attention and concern.

* Dysgraphia – It is a writing disability where a child finds it difficult to form letters, write within a defined space, poor handwriting and trouble putting thoughts on paper. Specific accommodations in the learning environment and additional practice will be beneficial for the one facing the disorder.

* Auditory and Visual Processing Disorders – It is a sensory disability where a child finds it difficult to understand language in spite of having normal hearing and vision. The child is unable to recognize and interpret information taken in through the senses.

* Nonverbal Learning Disabilities – This neurological disorder takes place in the right hemisphere of the brain. In case of this disability, a child finds problems with visual-spatial, intuitive, organizational, evaluating and other processing functions. This disorder is quite hard to understand and diagnose. Children are unable to recognize and translate nonverbal gestures such as facial expressions or tone of voice. They are not able to provide appropriate response to nonverbal stimuli and are wrongly considered as emotionally disturbed and branded as “problem children”. This type of disability occurs less than language based learning disorders.

These are the common learning disabilities in children. Though these disabilities may be difficult to cure, yet the combined efforts of parents, teachers and professionals can help children to go ahead and attain success in the future. Encourage their strengths, know their weaknesses, understand the educational system and learn different strategies which will help children get rid of their weaknesses and of the their development.
