Gifts for Kids

Posted on 11 May 2010

Gifts for kids are more than just another present. It is a statement of love and approval. They also serve as educational materials and should therefore be bought with all these in mind. Otherwise you may end up buying irrelevant gifts that are never used by the children or may not have any value addition to their growth and development. Below are some tips on what to consider in choosing the right gifts for kids:

Understand the love language of your child: Psychologists and experts in parenting will tell you that for every human being, there is a way in which we do know that we are loved. This has nothing to do with what everyone else shows love in our community. It is a distinct and unique way in which we feel loved. There are five languages of love. These are receiving gifts, acts of service, quality time, appreciation and words of affirmation. Therefore before you buy a gift, you need know if that is really the best language of love for your child.

The age of the child: Age is an important factor in deciding on gifts for kids. This is because the engagement of the mind will vary depending on the age of the child. An older child will need a gift that engages the brain more while a younger child will only need gifts that engage more of the psychomotor. You therefore have to know your child and know at what stage of development that they are at.

Identify the talent and build on it: A gift should build on the growth and development of the child. As already said in the paragraph above, the younger children should have gifts that engage their physic and the psychology. But even more importantly, the gifts for kids should be in line with the talents of the child. If the child loves music, then it would be best to buy a musical instrument for a gift. If the child loves sports, then the child should be bought a sport item which is appropriate for the particular sport.

This is also the point in which gender stereotyping should be eliminated. You can teach your child to overcome some career barriers such as those that have traditional pushed women out of engineering or money markets. The gifts for kids that you buy would interest or disinterest the child from certain career paths therefore be careful!

Read the guidelines: It is unfortunate that most people do not read the manufacturers guideline on a particular gift item meant for a child. This is so important because it also includes the safety guidelines. There are gifts that would be dangerous to the child, either psychologically or may cause choking. It is important that you read the manufacture’s guidelines for use of various items by children and take appropriate precautions.

Costs: It is important to teach your child to live within his or her means. It helps to go and shop together and agree on buying what you can afford and not what the kid wants. Be very open to the child and discuss this beforehand.
