Nothing can be more heart wrenching than leaving your child to somebody else’s child care. As a parent we would want what’s best for our child to leave them under somebody’s care.

We always want what’s best for our kids and we can’t be there for them all the time as we have to work too and leave them behind at home. Your only choice is to hire a babysitter to take care of your child when you’re out working. Hiring a nanny has many benefits but at the same time it also raises risks and fears for safety. Babysitters these days are involved in crimes like theft, carelessness and child molestation or abuse.

Sometimes it’s not an issue if you really know and trust the nanny and its natural you want to keep a careful watch on your child all the time. You should use nanny cameras at home to ensure your child’s safety and receiving the best care when you’re not around. Cameras are no longer considered to be a luxury but are a necessity. They are not expensive anymore and several companies have come up with ways on how to make them affordable for almost everybody. Choose one which will best fit your needs and your budget. Hidden nanny cameras are primarily wireless to make them suitable to install in all types of homes for in-house surveillance measures.

The most important reason why you want nanny cameras for home is to have the freedom and capability to see how the nanny is treating your child when you’re not at home. Catch child abuse at its earliest age if there is any. Make sure your nanny or babysitter is interacting with your child properly. Home security is another reason why you should have a hidden camera installed. It’s up to you if you want to let your babysitter know that a camera is installed for keeping everything in check. Telling them upfront is a preventive measure, but do not tell them specifically where the cameras are installed.

Restricted areas in your house or office can stop or discourage people from breaking in or trespassing. If someone does break in while you’re out, the camera will provide foolproof photographic evidence that will help in knowing the identity of the person and take things to court very smoothly as well. Nanny cameras are a source of peace and security for working parents. When someone betrays your trust you will actually see and hear the evidence, thanks to a nanny camera.

If you want to find good quality childcare there are a few steps to follow to make sure you are making a good choice.

The first step is to consider your childcare choices. Often family care or a daycare facility is the most popular options. Be sure to visit the location and ask questions. Consider the hours, fees and location of the services they offer. Ask your friends or relatives in order to get helpful recommendations.

Second, it is important to consider health and safety issues. Make sure the facility provides a safe environment both inside and out. How does the facility work with sick children? Is the facility clean and well cared for? Do they provide medications for your children and adequate naps?

Third, consider the interaction between the staff and children. Are the staff member’s patient, sensitive and able to stimulate children or are the children off to themselves? If possible, take the time to get to know the educator and learn about their experience, field of work and favorite activities to do with children.

Fourth, are lunches and snacks provided? Does it have all the necessary parts of a balanced meal including meat, fruits, vegetables and dairy products? Are they willing to work with food allergies or personal preferences?

A day care facility often plans their activities according to developmental areas. There is physical development, fine developing for hand-eye coordination, emotional development, intellectual development, social development and creative development. Make sure all these areas of development are covered in some way at the childcare facility.

Sixth, you want to make sure the childcare facility has all the proper certification, licensing and training. Make sure they are registered with the state and have certified educators. First-aid cards should be up to date. Any licenses should be posted in the lobby or entrance of the day care.

Consider what activities the facility offers and make sure they are based on all the required developmental areas listed above. Consider what they will do if children can’t participate in a specific activity and do they respect your child’s views.

Eighth, consider what the number of children per each adult is. Consider how many children are in your child’s group. It is best to have one adult per six children or one adult per four babies. Make sure you see if there are state laws about adult to child ratios.

Lastly, consider the environment. Where is your child going to spend their time? Is there enough space for activities? All of these factors are important when it comes to choosing the right child care facility for your children.

Eczema is a skin rash that can affect people at any age. But it is heartbreaking to see a baby with this skin condition. They just don’t understand why their skin is itchy and irritable. They are just miserable and cranky. This condition makes for a very unhappy baby and frustrating child care as well!

Most of the time, infant eczema is caused by the baby developing an intolerance to something in their diet or in their immediate surroundings. Chemicals and additives to our foods or in detergents, carpets, clothing, etc. can all be contributing sources of skin irritation in babies.

Babies can start showing signs of eczema at around two months old, although it can start at any age. The most common area for an eczema rash to appear is on the baby’s cheeks, forehead, and scalp. Many times babies will show signs of eczema on other parts of their body as well. As the baby gets older, the rashes will gradually decrease and some children even outgrow eczema completely.

You can help your baby feel better while he or she is experiencing the misery of eczema rashes. Perhaps the most important thing you can do for your baby is to keep their skin hydrated with hypoallergenic lotions or creams. Make sure you use a mild soap and warm, not hot water when bathing your baby. Hot water pulls moisture from the skin, so take care with the water temperature. Make sure it is warm enough to be comfortable, but not too hot! If your baby’s condition does not improve you may want to ask your doctor to recommend soaps or lotions that will help.

When skin becomes too dry it is more susceptible to rashes and skin conditions such as eczema. This is more apparent during the winter months when forced air heating causes the air in homes to become drier. You may want to consider running a humidifier in your home to replace the lost moisture in the air.

Try to keep your home free from pollen and pet dander. If you have a pet in the home, keep the carpets vacuumed and try to keep the pet away from the baby’s sleeping area. Pollen and pet dander are known allergens and can be the cause of your baby’s skin rash.

Many times clothing is the culprit. By washing your family’s clothing in mild detergents you can help to avoid any allergic reactions caused by chemicals. Choose clothing that is made with natural materials such as cotton and bamboo. These fabrics allow the skin to breathe. However, take care to avoid wool because of its scratchy nature.

Finding the cause of your baby’s eczema can be a source of frustration for parents, but by using a process of elimination you may be successful. The most important thing is to keep your baby happy and comfortable. Keeping the skin hydrated, the air moist and the home free from irritants are vital. If necessary, put small mittens or socks on your child’s hands to prevent scratching. If your child’s condition does not improve, consult your doctor for more information.

It is possible to have a happy, healthy baby in spite of the misery of eczema. Just follow the guidelines for keeping your baby’s skin hydrated and you will all be happier!

Based on survey, more than half of mothers with children are now working in office and for this reason they seek the services of child care.

For people who love working with kids, this sounds like ideal business to venture in. In choosing a location, one has the option to select do it in their home or renting a space in a commercial area. Be prepared because it involves dealing with everyday operations, inevitable kid’s issues, security and even legal aspects.

If you are planning to operate a child care business, there are certain traits that will come in handy. Aside from having an outgoing personality, being a solid leader is needed for your success. There are risks that accompany any business and having a reliable financial source comes into play. Hiring a great staff is also crucial in starting this kind of business. Remember that you are dealing with children so every decision should be well thought of.

Home based child care business would only take short time of planning as well as little cash. However if you want to be known commercially then it would take a lot of money and time. Take into consideration that size of your child care service is dependent on your resources. The main customers for full time child care are parents with children ranging from toddlers to five years old. You start an after school child program that caters to older kids. Dual income and single parent households are your main market for both services.

Starting this kind of business is not challenged by lack of resources in terms of information. There is a wealth of websites out there where you get advice, training and support from other child care providers. The future is bright if you want to start this kind of business as the need for this service would increase. This business would also provide an opportunity to expand in a lot of ways.

Being a parent is a tough one. Seriously. You don’t get a lot of child care training besides what your own mother and father did. There are books you can read and websites you can refer to, but everyone’s kids are different and none of the authors have met your children. So how do you know what to do?

The problem here is that common sense just isn’t that common (you’ve heard that before right?) and parents can sometimes combine that with just taking the easy way out. I’ll give them take-away food and let them stay up late if it makes them happy. That can be the ‘rut’ that a lot of parents get into where they just let the kids do and have whatever they want so that the peace is kept. Once you’re there and the kids know what they can have, it’s very difficult to get back to discipline and giving them what they need, as opposed to what they want.

Kristi and I have always been ‘different’ in that we tend to edge away from the conventional in a lot of areas. Not that we’re hippies or anything like that, it’s just that we look at things differently. Instead of asking ‘why’, we say ‘why not’. Instead of giving our kids crap food because “they like it” (of course they like it - it’s made to be tasty) we give them the same food that we eat and 95% of the time they love it. Also, they haven’t been exposed to a lot of ‘wrong’ food; they’ve never tasted a cola drink, they have sweets and chocolate sparingly and always as a treat NEVER as the norm. So we’ve come to a point where our 5 year old Emily is asking for salad sandwiches for her school lunches. She’s in great shape, she’s happy and so are we. She doesn’t feel like she’s missing out at all.

Back to fizzy soft drinks, I once saw a parent give one of these sugary monsters to an 18 month old who was not sleeping at night because “he likes it”. Do you really think that a kid who can’t sleep needs sugar and caffeine? The poor little one was mainly hyperactive during the day - he doesn’t need ADD drugs he needs less sugar in his diet. He also needs to know that he doesn’t get treats when he’s playing up.

I’m not a parenting guru and I don’t think anyone is, but I must remove my hat in honour of my darling wife Kristi who has always had a clear vision, instinctively, about what her kids should be exposed to from a dietary point of view. What you put into their bodies determines who and what they are. There are a lot of overweight kids out there and I don’t think there’s any excuse for that. How can you say you care for and love your children, then feed them food that makes them overweight. Worse still, you do that, see the results, then continue to do that.

This blog post started as a thought about parenting in general but I’ve realised, in wrapping up, that pretty much all of the problems that parents face come down to basic discipline, sticking to your guns and plain GOOD FOOD. Real fresh food can be so satisfying and beneficial on so many levels, not just nutritional but also behavioral. We’ve made some ‘interesting’ meals (from a kid’s point of view anyway) and our girls have vacuumed up everything on their plate.

Give you kids a real chance at a healthy, happy life by starting with the fuel you put in front of them and I think everything else will start to fall into place. If you’re not there right now then there might be some resistance but again, it’s about making a decision for your family’s well-being, sticking to your decision (which is another area where parents can fail) and watching the wonderful change in your pride-and-joys.

Parenting and child care are one of the hardest jobs in the world. Step parenting, however, is a notch harder. A step family is commonly formed due to the death of a spouse or a failed marriage that ended up in divorce.

Deaths and divorces are traumatic events not just for children but also for the parents themselves. Children may still be recuperating or grieving for their loss. Most children dream that their step family would be the same as their original one. They have expectations which a step parent might find hard to fulfill.

The main duty of a step parent is to redefine what a family is and to develop new relationships. Step parenting requires step parents to make their step children understand that a new identity and a better bond can be formed by integrating the different interests and hobbies of each step family member. It is unrealistic to expect instant love or attachment from step children but it is necessary to ask for respect as a step parent. You can do so by first showing the children respect-leading by example. Avoid any derogatory comments about their biological parents or their siblings. In disciplining the children, let their biological parent-your spouse-lead the way, especially with the older children.

For situations when the children rebel and adopt the you-are-not-my-parent tactic in order to avoid following you, try to be more patient but always be firm and clear. Be confident and say that your intention is not to replace their lost parent. If your spouse is not available to discipline your kids, you may tell them that you are the only adult at the moment and that you have the responsibility to uphold the rules of the house. Also, make sure that you and your spouse always show that you are united whenever in front of your step family.

When your kids are not around, you and your spouse can talk about the differences of the original and the present family. If you have your own kids and they live together with your spouse’s own kids, it is necessary to apply the same rules to all of them. Try to spend as much time alone with your step children to strengthen your relationship. Both biological and step children have the tendency to seek for your exclusive attention. Make time for all of them and try to spend as much time with all of them together. When having special talks with your biological kids, keep your voice down so that your step kids may not overhear you and think that they are less favored.

Always remember to have a positive attitude. Avoid sarcasm or criticism when communicating with your step children. This may help cement an everlasting good relationship with them. If your kids live in separate households, you and your spouse may have to visit them together to show that both of you support each one of them. Try keeping your schedule open for them even if it is inconvenient for you. If you see the children need both of you, always take the opportunity to be there and help out. This could earn their trust and their love. Also, never forget to keep your marriage in good status. Set some time aside so that you and your spouse can have your own time together.

People all over the country are trying to lose weight. They may try counting calories, skipping meals, cutting out certain foods, or working out long hours to try to pare the pounds. One thing weight-loss experts recommend to anyone trying to slim down is that they create a food journal to help lose weight especially for child care.

You can create a food journal out of any number of materials. You can get a three-ring binder with notebook paper, a spiral ring notebook, create a journal to suit your needs, or print out pre-made food journals which you find on the internet.

The purpose of a food journal is to track what you’ve eaten during the day. This will give you an accurate picture of what you’ve eaten all day long. It will ensure you’re getting all of the nutrients you need as well as helping you keep track of how much water you’re getting each day.

* Choose the type of journal you’ll use. As stated above, you can use nearly anything as a journal as long as you can carry it with you to track what you’re eating. Online journals aren’t recommended unless you write everything down during the day and then record things at the end of the day.

* Write down everything you eat during a 24-hour period. This includes all meals, snacks, chewing gum, hard candies, or beverages. You may want to use two pages per day to ensure you have enough room to write everything down. You can also use the space for the day to write down if you’ve eaten alone, with friends, what mood you were in when you ate, or other information which might affect how much you ate during the day.

* Throughout the day, look at your journal to ensure you’re getting enough of each food group. Did you eat get five servings of fruits or vegetables? Did you drink enough water? Did you eat too much of any food or too many fats?

* By keeping the journal, you can see what you’re actually eating, which foods you’re eating too many of and can cut back on, and which foods you need to eat more of. You can also determine how many calories you’re eating each day, and then make a decision as to where you can cut back.

Some pre-made journals will break down what you’re eating into categories such as fats, proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, fruits, and vegetables. You decide how in-depth you’d like your journal to be; if it’s too detailed and is more trouble than it’s worth you may not continue using it. The simpler you keep your journal, the more likely you’ll be to use it.

What can you learn when you create a food journal to help you lose weight? You can see if there are certain foods that cause you to stumble. You can also note if there are certain times of the day which you struggle most. Finally, you’ll have a better understanding of how much you’re actually eating during the day so you can decide what changes can be made to help you shed those unwanted pounds.

Sun worshippers make their way outdoors to catch the first rays of the sun, often before temperatures outside have stabilized. However, spending too much time in the sun without protection has been proven to cause skin cancer, very wrong for child care. You can reduce your risks of being a skin cancer statistic by following any of these five tips for being sun smart.

The medical profession has determined that at least 90% of all skin cancers are caused by over-exposure to the sun. If you’ve gotten sunburned just twice before you turned eighteen, you have double the risk of developing melanoma later in life. To avoid skin cancer:

1. Use sunscreen. This is probably your easiest and best plan to avoid damage from over-exposure to the sun. Applying SPF 15 or higher sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays to your skin and lips will help protect you. Apply sunscreen thirty minutes before you go out in the sun and reapply it every two hours while you’re in the sun. If you’re wearing sunscreen and bug repellent, be sure to apply the sunscreen first.

2. Cover up. When you’re going outside, after applying sunscreen, planning your wardrobe is another easy option. Even though it could be hot outside, wearing lightweight long-sleeved shirts, long pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses will limit the amount of skin that will be exposed. Covering up can also shield you from poison ivy, bug bites, as well as cuts and scrapes.

3. Seek shade. If you don’t want to be covered from head-to-toe, plan on avoiding the sunshine as much as possible. The hours of between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. are the worst times for being outdoors in direct sunlight. When those hours arrive, finding a place in the shade or going inside will keep you safe.

4. Guard your eyes. Sunshine can do more than damage your skin; your eyes can also be affected by UV rays. Finding sunglasses or other eyewear that blocks 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays is important. It would also be helpful if they wrapped around to offer more protection to your eyes.

5. Try a fake tan. You may love sun-kissed skin, but you know that spending too much time in the sun can increase your risk of skin cancer. To have the best of both worlds, use a fake tan product such as a self-tanner that changes the color of your skin over a period of time. You can have the bronze glow of a sun tan without having to worry about cancer in the future. Don’t forget to use sunscreen with a fake tan; they don’t protect your skin, just make it look tanned.

Having a tan has long been considered to be a sign of health. Times have changed, however, and people know that tanning is risky business. Don’t forget to safeguard children’s skin by using these same five tips for being sun smart. You can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer as well as your children’s.

One thing new parents worry about as their child enters toddlerhood is what is normal, what is acceptable, and what is not. They may wonder if their toddler sleeping in the same bed with them is healthy. Here are some child care guidelines you may want to consider.

Think about your toddler’s routine. Changing your evening routine a little bit could make things easier on you and your little one. This can be especially true if your toddler’s climbing into bed with you is keeping you or your partner from sleeping. Evening routines including quiet playtime and a soothing bath are the best ways to calm a toddler before lights-out.

Avoid over-stimulation. If you want your child to go to sleep and stay in their own bed, you want them to be tired, but not overly simulated. Set the stage for bedtime with lowered voices, bathing, brushing their teeth and then a story. Once your toddler learns your new routine, everyone will find sleeping in their own bed easier to do.

Don’t be surprised if your toddler cries or whines while they’re learning to remain in their own bed. Sometimes the crying can pull at your heartstrings, but try not to let them get the better of you. You may even hear the pitter-patter of little feet coming to your room to try and climb in bed with you. What do you do now?

Well, that depends on what you and your partner decide on ahead of time. If the two of you don’t mind at first, let your toddler in to snuggle up and go back to sleep. After your toddler has fallen asleep, your toddler can be taken back to their own bed.

If, however, you’ve decided it’s time to stop them from sleeping with you, one of you needs to get up and take them back to bed. No fussing is necessary. Calmly carry or walk them back and tuck them back into bed. Don’t forget their favorite teddy bear. Turn on a very dim nightlight and say goodnight very quietly. Next, despite their cries, turn and leave the room.

While there’s nothing inherently dangerous in allowing a toddler to sleep with you, it can put a kink in your relationship with your spouse. Many people, however, advocate a family bed. Ultimately the choice is up to you and your family.

Remember, however, you don’t have to be strict about never allowing your toddler back in bed with you. There’s nothing quite like early morning snuggles with your little one. If your child is sick, you may also want to bend the rules. Let them know that you expect them to stay in their own bed unless given permission to join you.

Finally, consider whether or not your child is ready to sleep in their own bed. When you ask yourself whether or not your child should sleep with you, remember that it’s a huge step for them. Do what you can to make the transition an easier one and you’ll all be able to enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Read this article to get some valuable input on how to be a better parent in trying times. Maybe you are a single parent struggling to raise a teenager on your own or you may be an overworked parent trying to raise tiny children. The child care qualities you will need to possess remain the same with few adjustments as the years roll by.

Read on to find out what mothers the world over consider as the answer to the question, “what qualities should a good parent possess.”

Patience with a capital “P” heads the list. You are going to have to call upon hitherto untapped resources to find the patience to deal with day to day circumstances that arise when raising children.

Let your children know how much you love them and never be backward to demonstrate the love you have for them. This will teach them to express their feelings and emotions and help them grow into caring individuals.

Pay attention to what your children are trying to tell you. Listen without judging and try to understand the reasons behind their actions. Talk to them without getting angry and frustrated and they will talk back to you. Your children need to feel confident in coming to you with their problems; they need a listening ear and someone to guide them when they go off track. If you rant and rave you will only succeed in pushing them away from you and you can bet they are not going to come to you when in a crisis.

Make time for your children, set aside family time that is totally devoted to them. Take the time to get creative when planning family activities and make sure that you include their personal favorite activities as well. Every one is always busy and has plenty to do but that will not work as an excuse. Your children need and deserve your attention – give it to them!

Treating your children with respect means they will in turn respect you, your authority and your decisions. While they may not always agree with your decisions, especially when it restricts television or telephone talk time, they will respect what you say. This is the best way to encourage obedience.

Learning to laugh and stay cool in situations where you would rather explode is an excellent quality to have. This provides a calm and stable environment for the children.

Keep personal disagreements with your spouse separate from the children and never interfere when one parent is doing the correcting. Time enough to discuss it with your partner behind closed doors if you do not agree with something.

When you consider what qualities should a good parent possess, the list is seemingly endless. Hopefully this article will help you get started.

Health is the most important thing in child care that is stressed upon right from the early beginning in life and kids exercise is one positive step that is taken towards this direction.

Kids love playing in the open fields and can run endlessly with a ball – in the happiness that this brings to them, they indirectly build themselves up both in body and in mind. A strong body is essential to take on the challenges and pressures of life. The stronger the physique is, the lesser is the chances of illnesses and sicknesses pulling the kid down to bed.

Kids exercise is one important curriculum in most schools and playhouses. Kids are taught to play together various games as well as activities that spread a feeling of togetherness among them and also help them in building up their strength and physique the way it is normally expected. The stronger the body is, the better is the defense mechanism against germs and viruses and better the immunity against all diseases. A healthy kid is always full of happiness and smiles, he or she is always busy with some thing or the other, whereas a sick child spends the greater part of his or her childhood in bed with the occasional visit to the physician for relief and comfort. Kid exercises can be of various kinds and types. There are various freehand exercises and others like cycling, running, jogging, swimming and even rowing and horse riding. Each of these exercises has their own sets of merits and advantages. The extent the exercise is required to be done, the timing for these exercises and the food that must be taken after the exercise is over is regularly researched upon so that there is an all round development in the health and well being of the child. Special trainers and instructors are available to teach some of the most popular kids exercise sets. These professionals are trained and have a huge amount of experience in making marvelous men out of the little kids with their frail little bodies and physique.

There are a number of kids’ exercise that can be done even without a qualified trainer. Nowadays with the video sessions and active music in the background, doing the little exercises becomes more of fun and excitement since the sessions are all structured and streamlined. You can buy a kids exercise training book that will give you step – by – step procedures of how the exercises are done. Some of these books go on to explain the merits of each exercise set and the way the exercise can help in overcoming any physical problems which the kid might have. Another easy method of learning the exercises is to go online. Be ready to learn the exercise that is being shown on the video and you will have a long enjoyable session right in front of the video screen. Generally, there are no charges in learning these online kids exercise courses but there are some sites that require a small membership fee in the beginning

When kids wear costumes they feel more confident because they start thinking of themselves as heroes and heroines. They feel more confident to perform in the stage because they feel highly of themselves when others call them by those respected character names.

You can ask kids to write and direct their own plays by wearing kids costumes for fun learning. You should do this often because you would be encouraging them to become more self sufficient. In the process they learn a lot of skills like thinking, problem solving, controlling situations etc.

Nowadays everyone wants their kids to dress up in the best of the attire. Parents have become so very conscious in child care that they want their little ones to look perfectly.

For such a cause they buy clothes after too much consideration. This is not only because of fashion and trend but also because virus and diseases have become very common. So whenever parents buy kids clothes they look very closely before making a purchase decision.
Proper kid’s clothes are very essential because flu and cold is very common amongst the little ones. Thus when you buy kids clothes you need to make sure that the clothes have got the right quality. If you are buying winter clothes then they should get the clothes which keep your baby warm and cozy. When you buy the kids clothes also get the one in which they can move freely and comfortably. Kids usually don’t like to wear clothes which irritate them and make them get uneasy. Their sweat should not get absorbed in the clothes which would make them sick.
The kid’s clothes should have a good quality material or else your baby can have skin rashes. For such a reason kids clothes are usually very soft and are made with good quality threads and wool. The clothes for kids are available in a huge variety and you can even look for them in the online stores. There are many different types of clothes that you can buy ranging from simple to formal and made to complement the various seasonal conditions as well.
The kid’s clothes should also have simple and unique designs. Try not to get very complicated patterns, buttons and pins which can be the cause of uncomforting for your kids. It should be easy to change as well. Kids usually are not fond of clothes which are too difficult to change. It is essential for your kids to change their clothes everyday which would make them healthy and keep them hygiene. So make a wise decision while deciding to buy clothes for kids.
Kid’s clothes are bought very regularly. This is also due the reason kids grow very quickly day by day and month by month. Parents need a lot of clothes so that their kids also look amazing and fashionable.
Parents want to make sure that when they buy clothes for their kids they are comfortable and they last longer. Hence buy kid’s clothes and learn the ways to wash them. This would keep the colors and material of the clothes for a longer time period and your kids would enjoy wearing them. If you don’t follow the right instructions then clothes might get into bad shape very quickly. So read the steps more closely and you would be able to achieve best results.
You can also ask your friend parents to recommend you kids clothes if you are new parents. They would be the best guide in telling you what clothes you should buy.

If your child has breath holding spells, you might feel like the only parent in the world who has ever experienced such a horror for child care. But actually, they are fairly common. In fact, as many as one-fourth of all healthy children have a breath holding episode at some point in their young lives. Even so, they can be quite alarming.

Not every breath holding spell is the same. There are two major types of breath holding spells. The good news is that neither one of them constitutes a medical emergency.

Cyanotic Attacks

The cyanotic attack is the most common type of breath holding spell. This occurs in response to an emotional trigger. Your child may be angry, upset, hurt or frustrated. He begins to cry, but stops suddenly when he exhales and fails to inhale. If he holds his breath long enough, he may turn blue, hence the name “cyanotic.”

In many cases, a cyanotic attack resolves on its own after a few seconds. Sometimes, however, the child passes out. But when that occurs, his reflexes take over and he begins to breathe again. Occasionally, children who experience a cyanotic attack have a mild seizure after losing consciousness, but this is not a sign of a seizure disorder. There is also no increased risk of seizure disorder or other neurological problems later in life.

Pallid Attacks

Pallid attacks are much less common than cyanotic attacks. They usually occur when the child is startled or injured. There is no crying involved, the child simply stops breathing. He turns pale, goes limp, and faints. Once again, when he loses consciousness, he begins to breathe again on his own.

Pallid attacks present no immediate danger beyond the risk of injury when fainting. Nor do they cause an increased risk of severe health problems later in life. Those who have pallid attacks as children, however, may have an increased incidence of fainting, known as syncope, later in life.

Handling Breath Holding Attacks

With both cyanotic and pallid attacks, it’s important that parents do not overreact. This could scare the child, or it could teach him that throwing tantrums and/or holding his breath is a good way to get attention or whatever else they want. Just make sure he is okay, and make an appointment with his pediatrician if it is his first attack or there is any reason for concern.

Cyanotic attacks are pretty easy to predict once you’ve seen your child have one. If you see one coming on, you could clap your hands to startle the child into breathing again. Placing a cold washcloth on his face may also cause him to start breathing.

Breath holding spells are rarely cause for concern. Children tend to grow out of them by the time they start school. But if you’re worried, a trip to the pediatrician can rule out more serious problems.

Parenting and child care aren’t easy jobs. If someone tells you it is, they obviously aren’t a parent! As a parent, you may be involved in many things – caring for the home, children, working outside of the home, and possibly volunteering. You may not have the time to care for your own needs, but it’s important that you do; a happy parent equals a happy family.

Take time out to pursue your own hobby or interest. Nearly every parenting book will espouse the need of parents to pursue some of their own interests to avoid burn-out. Perhaps you played a sport before becoming a parent. Being active will keep you healthy, show your children how to be healthy through activity, and increase endorphins in your body which will improve your mood.

Include your children in your hobby. Maybe you loved to roller skate as a teen. It may be time to take up skating again. Get skates for the whole family and everyone can have fun together.

Maybe your interests lie in another direction. Are you fixing up a room in the house? Children can learn how to help with do-it-yourself projects as well. They generally like painting even if they can’t reach the ceiling. Why not let them help? You’ll be able to share your interest with your child and get more accomplished at the same time.

Give yourself a time out. This might be associated primarily with disobedient children, but time outs can be a great idea for helping you to de-stress, which can definitely improve how you feel. This can also help you be a better parent because you’ll be calmer and more able to handle your children.

How do you know when you need a time out? Here are some indicators:

* You might talk louder
* You may clench your teeth
* You may feel your heart race
* You may feel your muscles tighten

If your children are safe, try leaving the situation. You can also ask another adult to keep an eye on them until you’ve cooled off. Go to your room or the bathroom where you can be alone for a few minutes. Take some deep breaths and then call a friend to help you talk thing through before returning to the stress-causing situation. When you’ve calmed down, you’ll be able to handle the situation better.

It’s important to realize you can’t do things for others – whether partner, children, or boss – if you’re tired, worn out, and frazzled. The old saying goes, “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” That may apply to parents in general, so do what you can to make yourself happy. Experts agree a happy parent equals a happy family.

Divorce can be traumatic, not only for the separating partners, but also for their children. Kids who are caught in the middle experience a deluge of emotions, including sadness, anger and confusion. How the parents handle the divorce, however, can make it more or less difficult for them especially for child development.

A frequent point of contention between divorcing parents is the set of rules that their children are expected to follow. Usually, while married, parents come up with a set of rules to which they can both agree. But in the event of separation, each parent may prefer to change the rules a bit for when the children are with them.

Overall, this is a bad idea. While it is ultimately up to the parent to enforce rules, having two different sets of rules is generally bad for the children. Here are a few reasons why this is so:

* Having to adjust to a different set of rules each time a child visits the other parent is difficult. They might get confused about which rules apply where, and that could get them in trouble.

* Children may resent the parent who enforces more restrictive rules. These rules might be in the child’s best interest, but he still feels that he’s being treated unfairly because they do not apply when he is with the other parent. This often leads to conflict between parent and child.

* A difference in rules can cause added conflict between the parents. Not only does this produce more stress in the adults, it also hurts the children. Even though the parents are separated, seeing them fight is not good for the children.

* Children need a sense of stability. This stability is lessened when their parents divorce. But being subject to the same rules at both households gives them some semblance of security.

Agreeing on the Rules

When you come to the decision to get a divorce, the first thing that’s usually discussed is who will get the children and how visitation will work. It’s also important to discuss the continuation of rules early on. Parents often assume that the other parent will keep the same rules, but that doesn’t always happen. This is especially true in households where the rules are flexible or not well defined.

For best results, rules should remain the same as when the parents were together. But children who are experiencing a state of transition may need to have their rules revised. For example, a child who is ready to start dating will need rules that weren’t necessary before. In such circumstances, the parents need to discuss the prospective new rules ahead of time and do their best to come to an agreement on them.

Having the same rules at both homes makes things easier for parents and children. It makes for less conflict and greater uniformity. While a divorce is not by nature a pleasant experience, maintaining a consistent set of rules can make it less unpleasant.

Adopting a child is an exciting and wonderful event. The process of child care will go a lot more smoothly if you prepare yourself with knowledge about how adoption works before you begin. Here are some things to keep in mind as you consider the adoption process.

* Open, semi-open and closed adoptions

This is the most important decision you will make as you begin the adoption process.

In an open adoption, an adopted child can maintain contact with his birth parents. An open adoption includes letters, emails, phone calls, and personal visits. It can be helpful for the child’s sense of wholeness and healing to be in contact with his birth parents, but this depends on the situation and lifestyles of the biological parents, of course.

As the adoptive parents, it is your decision as to whether you will allow open contact, but it should be a child-focused decision. It’s not about your convenience or preference; it’s about what is best for the adopted child.

Semi-open adoptions limit but do not prohibit the contact the adopted child can have with her birth parents. Generally, semi-open adoptions include receiving written correspondence and gifts from the biological parents, but no personal visits or phone calls.

Closed adoptions mean no contact is allowed between the adopted child and her birth parents.

* Domestic adoptions

Domestic adoptions, or adopting a child from your own country, can mean a long wait. Also, babies and children up for adoption in the United States tend to have behavioral or physical problems, which may or may not be an issue for a prospective adoptive parent. It is easier to obtain the medical history of the child in a domestic adoption, however.

The cost of domestic adoptions varies according to state, but generally they include an application fee, attorney fees, psychiatric and physical examinations for parents, and supervision after the adoption. These and any other costs or fees as per your state range in cost from $5000 to $40,000.

* International adoptions

Almost always closed, international adoptions are comparable in cost to domestic adoptions, averaging between $7000 and $30,000. This does not include travel, however. Overall, international adoptions are faster, but obtaining details about the child such as his medical history can be almost impossible.

* Adopting through the foster system

By far the least expensive way to adopt (averaging between $0-$2500), adopting through the foster system is a viable means of adopting a child. However, adoptive parents have less choice in the age, race, gender, and other particulars regarding the child they want to adopt.

Understanding how the process works and the variables involved go a long way in facilitating the adoption process.

You may have a heart for child care adoption, but find the prospect of the expense rather daunting. Learning about the reality of the costs involved, however, can give you a sense of what you are dealing with and a financial goal. It will be far less discouraging in the end if you learn about the fees and costs associated with adoption ahead of time. This also avoids getting partly through the process only to find out you can not afford it.

The expenses vary by state, agency, and the type of adoption. There are also various financial resources that can make adoption more affordable. Following is a general list of costs to give you an idea.

1. Agency fees

These vary quite widely, and the same agency usually has different fees for different countries. The categories and approximate costs of agency fees are:

*Application fee: $175-$200
*Home inspection or home study: $1500-$2500
*Dossier fees (international adoption), which involve legal documents from the child’s country of origin: $2500-$3000
*Adoption program fee, which varies by country: $7500-$12,250
*Orphanage fee (international adoptions)-some countries require that a donation be made to the orphanage in which the child lived, and differ by country. In China, the orphanage fee is between $3000-$4000. Be sure to ask your agency about this fee.

2. Post-placement supervision costs range between $200.00 to $1500.00.

3. Legal fees

Varying between $500 and $4000, legal fees encompass the preparation of paperwork and documents related to the adoption.

4. Health/medical care

You may pay for the prenatal care, delivery, and living costs for the time between the child’s birth and the time he or she comes into your home. These expenses can range from $10,500-$32,000.

Health and medical expenses for the child could potentially be relatively high or on-going, perhaps involving counseling, medication, or other specialized care. These costs are entirely dependent on the medical condition of the child.

5. Education costs

The cost of educating an adopted child is no different from any other child unless the adopted child has special needs (such as a learning disability). In an international adoption, there is also the possibility that the child’s education will need to include learning English. In these cases, it’s possible that extra counseling, tutors, or alternative education (such as homeschooling) will need to be implemented.

There are various loans, grants and scholarships available to assist eligible adopted children with college tuition and other educational costs. Some states, such as Connecticut, offer assistance to aid in the tuition costs of post-secondary education. Your local department of education will have information specific to your state.

6. Financial resources

There is also financial assistance for the actual costs of adoption. Your employer may offer expense reimbursements through an adoption foundation. Many states offer subsidies and the federal government offers tax credits for adoptive families.

While the state federal aid is usually confined to domestic adoptions and those through the U.S. foster care system, that is not necessarily the case; it is worth looking into. Check with various banks, too - some of them offer low-interest loans to cover adoption costs.

Once you get a handle on some of the costs, you may find that adoption is a possibility for you.

Moving can be stressful, especially if there are children involved. But, there are some things you can do to make it easier especially for children activities. Here are some tips to make the transition go more smoothly.

-Make a list
Trying to keep a running list in your mind of what needs to be done can tax your sanity. Early in the game - as in months ahead - take some time to sit down and make a comprehensive moving plan, complete with details. Then your mind can rest and you can see what has been done, and what you still need to do.

-Purge your house of unnecessary items
There is a reason why people have moving sales. Both packing and unpacking are made easier when there is less stuff. You don’t have to have a moving sale if the notion seems daunting. You can give your items to a charity or give them away online. Some charities will even come to your house and pick up your stuff.

-Organize
Whether you are packing and moving your own items or hiring movers, be sure the boxes are well labeled. Consider specific boxes for special items, especially those things that will be needed right away: cookware, special children’s toys, bedding, etc.

-Call ahead and have utilities ready
Arrange to have the utilities turned on and in your name on the day you move in. Nothing adds to stress like not having running water or electricity, and trying to make phone calls to get the utilities turned on when there is no phone service hooked up.

Moving with children

-Make lots of special visits to the new house with the children
Before actually moving in, take your children to visit the new house as often as is practical. Take a picnic and eat on the floor or in the yard, or bring a special toy reserved only for the new house. Consider a homecoming party when you do move in, where the children each get a special gift that signifies their new home. Talking about the party you are going to have will give children something to look forward to.

-Encourage participation
Children feel insecure when they feel something is happening to them without any input. While children may not get a choice in when/where you move, letting them participate in as many aspects of the move as possible will help them feel empowered and view the move in a more positive light. Allow them to help paint their new room, for example, or pick paint colors (narrow it down to two or three colors you can live with before letting them choose!). If children get to participate, they will gain a sense of ownership of the new house.

In time, your family will settle in and your new house will become home.

A significant part of preparing your home for a foster child care is preparing yourself. A prospective foster parent must prepare his or her heart to deal with the sacrifice, the pain (sometimes foster children have truly tragic stories), and the joy.

It’s also important to see to it that the child is comfortable in his or her new foster home. Of course, if you are prepared mentally and emotionally, that adds greatly to the child’s comfort. There are some practical things, too, that you can do to make the foster home a place of refuge and love.

* Know your state’s requirements

Much of the physical aspects of your home - types of toys, sleeping accommodations, etc. - are determined by the state. An inspector or case worker will come to your home and determine whether it is suitable for a foster child, looking for proper safety measures (such as smoke alarms), number of bedrooms (some states require a separate bedroom for each foster child), etc. It will make the process go a lot more smoothly if you find out your state’s requirements ahead of time.

* A welcoming home

Besides state regulations, you probably want your home to project a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere. Try to keep the household quiet on the day of the foster child’s arrival. Let your children know they will need to be quiet and calm, but not stifled. Make sure the house is free of clutter which can be overwhelming to a child who is already feeling traumatized. If you have pets, especially big dogs, put them outside or in a separate room at first.

* Put valuables away

Keep any “tempting” items, such as jewelry, electronics, or other valuables out of sight. As you adjust to this new child and discover his strengths and weaknesses, you will learn where you can relax the rules and where you need to tighten them up.

* The child’s own space

Remember that a foster child is going through something traumatic, and may have known little but trauma for most of her life. She will need a space of her own where she can go to process her thoughts and feelings when she feels overwhelmed. Prepare this special space, most likely a bedroom, by making it welcoming and peaceful - a comfortable chair, a neatly made bed, some books, and maybe some stuffed animals. Quiet, soft toys are a good place to start.

* Preparing your other children

Of course there will be a period of adjustment, and some bumps along the road are to be expected. To prevent any big set-backs, though, it is a good idea to prepare your children for the foster child. Let them know how things are going to be different, and why you are taking a foster child in to your home.

The whole family can participate to make the fostering experience a joyful and rewarding one for everyone involved.

Breakfast daily: Start each day with a good breakfast, including dairy, fiber and fruit. Select items such as whole grain toast, low or fat-free milk, bananas, pears and high-fiber oatmeal with nuts and berries.

C. Cholesterol management: Get an advanced test that tells you and you doctor about the dangerous cholesterol — directly measured LDL, non-HDL, apoB and subparticles — that can hurt your arteries. The Vertical Auto Profile (VAP) lipid test from Atherotech is one such test.

D. Diet: Think moderation, balance and “heart healthy” throughout the day. Eat fruits, veggies, fiber, complex carbs, proteins and healthy fats. Experience European dining with each meal.

E. Exercise: Exercise daily — walk at lunch with coworkers, before orafter work with your pets, join in team sports or find an outletthat gets your heart pumping for at least 30 minutes a day.

F. Fiber is your friend: Read the nutrition label on foods so you knowwhat you’re eating and to better manage your cholesterol, fiber andother nutrients.

G. Glucose in moderation: Too much sugar and starch contribute todiabetes. Get tested for diabetes with a blood glucose test, and cutback on pasta, potatoes, sodas, ice cream and fast food.

H. Healthy lifestyle: Lead a healthy lifestyle, which means no smoking, seeing your clinician every year for a physical, and laughing often.Spend time with friends, kids and grandkids.

I. Imagine: Use your imagination to enjoy life and get the most out of each and every day. Have fun, do what you love and what makes youhappy.

Irwin Redlener, MD, President and Co-founder of the Children’s Health Fund, a national organization that advocates for and develops primary child care programs for disadvantaged and medically underserved children, today released the following statement on release of the final Senate health care legislation by Majority Leader Harry Reid:

“First and foremost, we applaud the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on producing this historic health reform bill which will provide millions of currently uninsured children access to comprehensive health insurance coverage.

“We support Congress’ goal to fulfill President Obama’s campaign promise to provide mandated coverage for all children. We have been vocal in our concern for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and we are hopeful that Senator Reid’s manager’s amendment, that keeps the program intact through the end of 2019 with funding until 2015, will be preserved as Congress moves forward with this process.

“We do remain concerned, however, about its future fate: CHIP will run out of funding in 2015 and expire in 2019, moving millions of children into private coverage through an untested health insurance exchange that will increase costs and may deter families from signing their children up for insurance. The implication of fewer kids with health coverage is disastrous, both from a public health and an economic standpoint.

“As the bill moves forward, CHF urges Congress to preserve CHIP and provide funding for the entire authorization period.

“We are pleased with the number of positive health measures for kids and their families, among which are provisions that will require insurance companies to allow children to stay on their parent’s plans until they are 26 years old and Medicaid expansions that allow foster children to remain on Medicaid until they are 26 years old.

“The legislation bans insurance companies from denying children with pre-existing conditions coverage under their parent’s plans, an important reform measure which we believe will enable sick children, and families suffering under debt, to get the care kids need.

“Likewise, we are pleased with the inclusion of pediatric specific benefits in the list of essential benefits to be provided to all Americans in the newly formed exchange and efforts to strengthen access to oral health for children. Pediatric oral health is often lacking in medically underserved areas, with dire consequences for children and families.

One of the most common questions from parents this time of year is what they should give to their babysitter or child care nanny this holiday season.

While a third of sitters said they are not expecting a holiday gift from their families this year, those who are hoping for a little something were fairly consistent. The following are those gifts topping sitters’ wish lists for this holiday season.

Monetary Gift. Fifty-seven percent of Sittercity sitters ranked cash the highest on the list. Some parents prefer bonuses to raises because a bonus is not a year-round commitment. So how much do you pay? For a part-time sitter, double her pay for the last job that she had before the holidays. For a steady babysitter/nanny working more than 20 hours a week, consider doubling her weekly salary for one week instead.

Gift Certificates. If a monetary gift is not an option, a Sittercity.com poll indicated that the most popular non-cash babysitter gift is a gift certificate. There are a great deal of gift certificates to choose from: movie passes, popular restaurant, favorite store. Make sure you know what your sitter likes so he or she can get something they would use for the holidays.

Handmade Gifts. Sitters and nannies often love getting handmade gifts from the children, so that’s a great place to start. Have the kids make your sitter an ornament, delicious holiday cookies and or a thoughtful card is a cute and personal way to show your appreciate for all that your caregiver does. Note: Handmade gifts are good on their own, but it’s best to supplement them with a monetary gift.
Remember that whatever you can afford to give your sitter this season, all that matters is that she knows she is appreciated. Just taking a few minutes to thank her for everything she does for your family will go a long way in helping to make her season bright. Happy gifting!

If fashion mimics our culture, what does the dawn of a new decade bring for our baby’s child care and fashion? With over 8 years experience in running a successful on-line baby boutique in trendsetting Los Angeles, proprietor Dawn Torress of RecurrentDreams sought out to answer this question. “Parents have a new sense of social awareness, and are optimistic for what the future holds for our children”, states D. Torress. “They continue to want the best for their babies, but what’s changing is what they consider ‘best.’”

The new “best” is unique baby clothes that are free-trade, sweat shop free, preferably made in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Europe or Australia. And “best” is even better, if it’s eco-friendly, made from sustainable fabrics, organics and bamboo. “These next genesis fabrics are full of color and are luxuriously soft for baby’s delicate skin. Long gone are the drab scratchy organic wools of yesteryear” says Torress.

Styles are preciously classic yet relaxed as we emerge from recession. Warm pinks and sky blues are modern again with aargyle and kimono side ties. Colorful whimsy prints are seen on traditional baby rompers. Think orange owls, rich chocolate trims, turquoise guitars and animal prints. Little girl dresses take their inspiration from the storybooks of renaissance princesses and a midsummer’s night dream. “Celebrity favorites are California designers Luna Luna Copenhagen, Made Sky Kids and Toni Tierney Designs. They are constantly mixing things up season to season”, states D. Torress. “Miraculously, they have managed to keep their prices at bay, while maintaining high quality and excellent work conditions for their sewers.”

Will the twenty tens be as fashion iconic as were the 60’s and 70’s? Then again, when all is said and done, every generation laughs at the old fashions and follows the new; and babies base most of their fashion taste on what doesn’t itch!

Munchkin, Inc., designer and manufacturer of clever infant care and toddler products, in partnership with Church & Dwight Co., Inc., makers of ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda, today unveiled the ARM & HAMMER Diaper Pail, a breakthrough diaper disposal system. The ARM & HAMMER Diaper Pail neutralizes odors in the nursery through a patented odor control system with the power of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda at its core.

“The most important thing about any diaper disposal system is that it controls odors. This new system employs the built-in power of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda to provide natural, safe and effective odor elimination,” said Doug Gillespie, Munchkin Vice President of Marketing. “We also knew the pail had to be easy for parents to use, so we developed a patented self-sealing system and refill bags that you simply snap, seal and toss in the trash.”

The ARM & HAMMER® name has been trusted for generations to eliminate odors, and Munchkin is known to today’s parents for delivering clever solutions to their everyday needs. The ARM & HAMMER(TM) Diaper Pail has numerous innovations that reflect the respective strengths of the two brands.

Baking Soda Dispenser: A built-in, vented dispenser sprinkles odor-eliminating baking soda each time the lid is closed and continuously absorbs and eliminates odors even when not in use.

Self-Sealing System: Munchkin’s patented system automatically seals the bag when the lid is closed and keeps it sealed when the lid is reopened.
Snap, Seal and Toss Bags: The disposable refill bags, each of which can hold up to 25 diapers, shut tight with a snap and can be easily tossed and replaced without cutting or tying.
